About Marine Navigator

Marine Navigator is an offline navigator using raster navigational charts (RNC's) to plot your position in real time. This way you can navigate with true copies of official paper charts on your mobile device. This full version of the Marine Navigator provides besides the functionality of the lite version the following enhanced functions:
* automatic chart switching depending on current position and zoom level
* scrolling through all charts available for the current location by "press and hold" zoom buttons
* display of number of available charts for current location in the zoom buttons
* display of outlines of installed charts in active chart
* chart rotation (True North, True Course, Compass Heading, original chart orientation)
* support of non-mercator projections (Polyconic, Transverse Mercator, UTM, ...) by polynomials
* support of geodetic datum other than WGS84/NAD83 by applying northing and easting
* tracks, way points, routes
* follow route automatically
* intuitive route editor
* gpx import and export of waypoints and routes
* gpx export of tracks
* recording of tracks in active and standby mode
* compass (magnetic heading, true heading, true north indicator)
* different dashboard layouts (basic data, detailed route data, detailed GPS data including graphical status info)
* Man Over Board (MOB) functions
* import and storage of installed charts in external folders
* support of encrypted charts including activation via EMAIL
* switching between chart sets (support of large number of installed charts)

Marine Navigator doesn't come with pre-installed nautical charts. Instead it is able to import BSB/KAP raster navigational charts or to use native Marine Navigator MNX-charts (see menu->help for instructions). BSB/KAP charts are available for free download on the Internet:
* http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/index.htm (Suite of NOAA nautical charts that covers the coastal waters of the U.S. and its territories)
* http://www.mar.mil.br/dhn/chm/box-cartas-raster/raster_disponiveis.html (Suite of CHM nautical charts that covers the coastal waters of Brazil and its major rivers)
* http://www.linz.govt.nz/hydro/charts/digital-charts/nzmariner (NZMariner is the product name of New Zealand's Official RNC folio.)
* http://www.openseamap.org (Openseamap charts are based on Openstreetmap data enriched with additional nautical information. The charts cover selected european coastal waters).
Native Marine Navigator MNX-charts are offered by selected chart distributors. The charts are maintained by the distributor. They are not free. Further regions are coming):
* http://www.visitmyharbour.com/download-android-charts (Chart sets for UK/IRL, IBERIA, Belgium and Netherland)
* http://maps.soltek.se (Charts for Sweden and Finland)

Try before you buy: You can test the basic functions of Marine Navigator by downloading Marine Navigator Lite. If you like the app and are looking for a comprehensive set of navigational functions purchase this full version.

Excellent chart app that I use with charts from "Visit my Harbour". Setup is a little tedious but only needs to be done once. AIS demo mode works. Hope author rolls it out quickly.

Amazing app. Turns your smart phone into a fully functional navigation device. I had used the lite version to navigate all over the Great Lakes for the past three years and just upgraded to the full version. Don't delay like I did! The functionality is amazing.

Downloaded app and then bought charts for UK. Over 20 attempts, closely following the instruction but neither my son nor I could get the app to pick up the charts. Am asking for a refund as the app/charts don't work on a Samsung S7

An excellent app that works well with the UK charts from "visit my harbour" website. Looking forward to using the AIS overlay that has just been released. Well done!

Installed on Galaxy S8. Cursor coordinates do not match actual chart coordinates. Not sure how helpful this will be. Otherwise looks like a nice app.

My favorite boating app. Cant wait for the official ais upgrade to be available, I already ordered a nmea 0183 wifi bridge to feed my ais to my phone and tablet. I only wish there were more sources for kap files. Searching for usable maps apart from whats in the handful of websites listed in the import section is near impossible, I just cant find maps for most of where I want to sail outside of the USA. I'd pay more for a worldwide directory of usable kap files, even if I also have to pay separately to actually download them.

When I reset my device my charts disappeared, but managed to get them back after another reinstall, followed by import and new Activation Request. Thanks for your help!

Fantastic app! Better than a $2000 chart plotter. Takes a while to load up the apps; definitely do it ahead of time. Absolutely great to have real charts in my pocket when we're sitting at dinner, planning the next day's sail etc. I got a clamp mount for my tablet, and now I have a big display hands free at the helm. So good, I think I'll run a usb charger out and maybe skip the chartplotter.

I have used this app for years now. I love that it is offline, meaning you don't need a phone connection to use it. Out of phone signal? No problem, as long as you already have the appropriate charts downloaded and your phone has dedicated GPS, which almost all do these days. It's intuitive and therefore easy to quickly learn. Downloading Raster charts is relatively easy from NOAA in the US.. The layout of the display is great, and the zoom features take me into the very level of detail I need in a given situation. It has never given me a problem and I have now used it on several different phones. Never once has it glitched. I am actually shopping a tablet now with GPS to provide a bigger screen then my 5.5" phone, (though I don't really need it). They are available online for $60-$90. That compared to 400-1000 or more for dedicated marine unit. You can't ask for more than that. Best app I have on my phone.

Best navigator I have tried. I particularly like the excellent image quality on a tablet and the ability to easily freeze the chart selection to be able to zoom out for an overall view. Well done.

The app hasn't worked since the last Android update several months ago. The author has not released any updates so obviously has no intention of fixing it. Don't waste your money.

Excellent backup to a chart plotter. Uses free government-issued charts. The user interface is reasonably intuitive.

IMHO this is probably the best RNC navigation app that uses official RNC charts directly from their respective sources. For voyage planning purposes this app runs circles around professional ECDIS machines costing tens of thousands of dollars more. I purchased this app over 5 years ago. Mr. Koenig keeps improving and updating this app over the years and has implemented several suggestions I have made a few years ago. In addition to planning, I also use it to verify that the vessel is on course no matter where I am on the vessel (even inside with a marginal GPS signal near portholes). I have not observed any deviation when comparing it against IMO type approved equipment. -- I am a USCG licensed professional mariner with an unlimited master's license (Any Gross Tons, Oceans) since 1999 with 30 years sea experience.

Not totally intuitive to set up but worth the effort. It works really well with some slight niggles. Blanks on adjacent charts when working away from vessel position is a bit unnerving. Would love to see NMEA integrated and then thus would get 6 out of 5.

This is a very good app for daysails, maybe. But for coastal travel it is too ponderous. There needs to be a way to import more than one chart at a time from the bsb_root folder. I would rather press a SELECT ALL button (or check the box that means to select all in a list view) and have to walk away for an hour or two, than to sit there and select them for import one at a time. I would even prefer, since you do not use the downloaded NOAA file directly, to have a separate app to do the conversion and import to the default list of all charts that appear in the bsb_root folder automatically. This would save a tremendous amount of time. Either option would serve to automate the mind numbing process a little.

Been using the light app for quite some time maybe 2 years and have finally decided to go with the paid app. Also used the lite app with great success in both rivers and In Shore. I anticipate this version will be more Dynamic

Used this for 2 years with VMH charts. After using Transas software on PC, this app is very usable, used it to navigate from Great Yarmouth UK south past Harwich Thames, Dover to Plymouth. It never faltered unlike the Garmin plotter.

Buy it. For $10 you are set up with a first rate plotter. Lite version works 100% and will get you there but the full version is a great deal. I purchased it as a token of graditude to the developer for making the lite version a working app. Love it.

Nicely executed app, and when twinned with the VMH charts for European waters is an excellent alternative chart plotter. I love the way the app zooms from large scale to small on raster charts letting me see all the notes that are tough to pick up on vector charts. One plea for the next release. Please add an AIS display and connection to the boat systems. That way this could be my sole plotter for low power draw on passage.

Just started at home with app on Samsung Tab 3. I must be dense; I set some waypoints but see nothing anywhere explaining route planning. Nor have I seen the phrase "go to". I have not seen any trace of the three dashboards shown/described. I loaded NOAA charts OK I think (twice, it appeared) but none show the green checkmark described. I get that there is a learning process, but this thing is way short on instruction. I guess I'm only out $8.40, still very disappointed so far. Is there an MN for Dummies out there? -TC

Great app, although there is little learning curve to get used to things. I wish there was a quick tutorial. Here are two notes: First, it takes a while to import maps, so be prepared to let your device sit while while it imports the vector files. Each map was like 5-10 minutes so I definitely want to plan ahead for this. Second, I wanted all my relevant maps in the same folder zip file, because that way they will all show up in the same folder for the automatic switching. If I import each map in a different folder zip file, it's more cumbersome to switch back and forth. After selecting a new folder, I have to quit the app and restart it (which is fast) for the map auto-switching to take effect. Overall, this is a truly awesome app, bringing in the high quality NOAA charts aligned with GPS capability to see exactly where I am. Thank you for putting together such a great app.

App loads NOAA charts nicely. However, with an external GPS (tablet does not have an integrated GPS) no position is marked by this app. Google Maps is able to mark position with both the USB and Bluetooth external GPS units I use. Disappointing.

I have used this program with the VMH charts for two years on my Hudl 2 Android tablet and think it is excellent for coastal and open water navigation. I prefer it to the Navionics app I also have. I am planning to take it on a passage from Plymouth to the Cape Verdes as a back-up. The only problem I have is the tracks not showing, but could well be a Hudl glitch Thanks very much for a great app.

by S####:

I use MN with VMH charts. It's a pretty good combo, but if I were to be picky I'd identify a couple of irritations: first, although you can save tracks, I can't see a way to view them; second the route editor allows you to append or prepend waypoints (in one menu), and to append, prepend or insert route points (in another), but you can't insert waypoints. But these really are quibbles in that the MN/VMH combo gives you a full up-to-date set of charts and a fullspec marine grade chartplotter.

I find this app pretty intuitive. It's simple enough my kids know to use it. It's great for the US as the digital charts are all free from NOAA. This not the case with other countries like Canada. I've had this app for several years now. An upgrade added many new features. A great app got much better.
