Al momento de realizarse la publicación del segundo libro, esa división realizada al primero quedó revocada de hecho, ya que las subsiguientes impresiones se refieren a primera y segunda parte, en relación con el primer y segundo libro, respectivamente.
Se puede decir, que Don Quijote de la Mancha, es la primera obra genuinamente desmitificadora de la tradición de los caballeros andantes, por que realiza un tratamiento burlesco de la misma; también representa la primera novela moderna y la primera novela polifónica; y como tal, su éxito produjo una enorme influencia en toda la narrativa del continente europeo.
