Peristiwa Gerakan 30 September 1965 atau yang kemudian dikenal dengan G-30-S/PKI itu merupakan peristiwa tragis yang tidak pernah dilupakan oleh bangsa ini, baik oleh kalangan TNI, kalangan NU maupun kalangan PKI sendiri. Peristiwa itu terus diingat karena peristiwa itu sangat mengerikan dan menyakitkan, sehingga selalu dikenang agar tidak berulang. Berbagai buku catatan dikeluarkan baik versi pemerintah atau TNI, adapula aversi perguruan tinggi baik lokal maupun dari Barat yang berpretensi netral walaupun seringkali terjebak pada satu sisi. Selain itu muncul berbagai buku versi PKI yang ditulis dalam bentuk berbagai memoir atau biografi yang semuanya membela diri, terutama tentang ketidakterlibatan mereka dalam peristiwa tragis tahun 1965 tersebut.
Dalam situasi begini membuat masyarakat awam menjadi bingung terutama diri kalangan generasi muda yang tidak ikut menyaksikan dan mengalami peristiwa tersebut, sehingga informasi apapun yang diterima tidak bisa dikonfirmasi kebenarannya ataupun kekeliruannya, akhirnya padangan yang muncul belakangan begitu mudah diterima, sehingga saat ini telah mampu membersihkan PKI dari peristiwa 1965 itu, sehingga yang muncul bukan istilah G-30-S/PKI, melainkan G-30-S, di mana PKI tidak terlibat atau disangsikan keterlibatannya. Perubahan ini sempat menghebohkan saat diperkenalkan melalui buku pelajaran di sekolah. Memang awalnya Kol. Untung sendiri menyebut gerakannya sebagai Gerakan 30 September, tetapi ketika semuanya jelas bahwa pelaku Gerakan 30 September tersebut adalah PKI, maka ditegaskan menjadi G-30-S/PKI,
sebagai pengukuhan dan penegasan siapa pelakunya. Maka saat ini ketika para aktivis PKI pada bebas maka mereka merehabilitasi dirinya salah satunya menyangkal keterlibatan PKI.

Tentu generasi muda tidak bisa menyangkal pernyataan itu, termasuk di kalanagan muda NU, karena tidak tahu mana informasi yang sebenarnya. Karena itulah ketika bertubi-tubi keluar informasi bahkan kemudian belakangan tidak hanya menyudutkan TNI dan pemerintah orde baru, tetapi sudah mulai menyudutkan NU, Ansor terutama Banser. Bahkan kalangan muda NU banyak yang terpengaruh oleh propaganda PKI dan simpatisannya tersebut hingga ikut menyalahkan para kiai dan ulama, sebagai pihak yang harus bertanggung jawab dan harus minta maaf pada PKI. Hal itu karena tidak jelasnya peritiwa tersebut bagi mereka yang masih muda. Selain itu sejarah dibaca hanya sepotong yakni episode 1965. Karena hanya penggalan itu yang disajikan para sejarawan, yang menulis sejarah hanya secara snapshot (sepenggal) fragmen, tidak pernah meninjau rentang sejarah sebelumnya secara keseluruhan sejak 1945, 1950-an sampai 1965 yang diwarnai dengan ketegangan dan keganasan yang dilakukan oleh PKI, atas nama rakyat dan revolusi.
