About CycleStreets journey planner

Plan routes from A to B anywhere in the UK, with a choice of four routing modes to suit a range of cyclists from beginner to regular commuter. The Photomap lets you submit photos of infrastructure problems or good practice around the UK.

PLAN BIKE NAVIGATION FROM A TO B TO C

Select a start and finish point, plus intermediate waypoints, by tapping on the map, by searching for names/places/postcodes, or by using your current location, and tap to obtain the route. Uses the general street network, plus Sustrans and other routes.

CHOICE OF FOUR ROUTING MODES

The app produces routes that will suit most cyclists. It can optionally can find faster or quieter routes for different types of rider. Routes are fetched from the CycleStreets website.

HILLS? NO PROBLEM!

The journey planner knows about hills, and finds routes that take advantage of the descents and avoids the ascents where possible. It balances these against the available road types. The route can be displayed on a map with contours using the OpenCycleMap option.

STAGE-BY-STAGE ITINERARY

As well as the main map view, planned routes are loaded into an itinerary view, so you can follow each part of the journey. The street name, time and length are all shown, as is a detailed map for each individual stage of the journey. Routes are saved so you can also follow them again later.

PHOTOMAP

The Photomap is a cycling advocacy tool used by campaign groups around the country. Use it to browse examples of problems or good practice, and add your own pictures. Need more cycle parking in your favourite spot in town? Sign in with a free account and add a photo of it to the Photomap.

OPENSTREETMAP

Routing makes use of OpenStreetMap data, the brilliant 'geo-wiki' to which you can contribute. Note that, at present, some areas of the country have better coverage than others. Streets and paths of all kinds, including Sustrans routes and Local Authority network, are included. Routing quality is being developed all the time, with new types of cycling and street data being added and interpreted by the route planner.

Brilliant app but crash too often. I've downloaded the vector maps but I cannot open points of interest offline. When I do so the app just crash everytime. Also, it would be awesome if elevation profile can also be shown on route. Looking forward to next update.

Absolute mess completely unusable, can't find fleet street in London (!), then it can, then it can't, then it can... For some reason I can only search for street- no house number, after flipping phone app resets to beggining greeting. Very frustrating. Maps are great on website but it's a bit tricky to carry Pc with me while biking.

Usefull app for planning journeys and has voice turn instructions when using live ride. However if you go off route states replanning route, but then stops working untill you get back onto original route!

I am struggling with the fact the ios version of this app will work out a circular route for you if you tell it how many miles/how long you want to ride for and the android version has no such feature that I can find. It's also much clunkier. I love the quiet route function though!!

W70%
by W####:

Good sides: you can get cycling directions for different types of ride, eg quiet route, fast route. Bad sides: can't display points of interest, such as cafes and bike shops. The app crashes a bit too often.

I used to love this app. Great routes and great options. But recently it hardly ever seems to work. Same story when I try using the online version through a browser.

X70%
by X####:

The route it gave for travelling from city center to putney was ridiculous, there's awesome road(no bike lanes) on top side of the river, but map shows busy smelly, stinky road at the bottom of the river. Needs more user input, then just cycle lanes map. Google maps better

I tried to use this to plan my commute to work and half way through it just stopped working.

I just asked it a route i already know and the way it wanted to take me was to say the least ridiculous.

Do not click the blog menu, you can never load the app again, every load it now opens the blog

Really enjoyed using this app. It got me successfully from beckenham to Waterloo today with accurate turn by turn navigation in my earphones. however if I went more than 50m off the route it said "recalculating the route" but then failed to give further directions until I went into the app which meant stopping and getting the phone out. Running android 6 on moto E.

I'm giving this 5 because the routes are consistently ones I love. My ride this morning ride from Tooting to the Thames Barrier was fantastic - quiet easy streets. The UI has improved no end too and LiveRide is working again! The only slightly clunky thing now is that when you choose 'current location' as the starting point it starts you from the last place you centred yourself on the map - even hours ago. But still 5 points from me - I just have to remember to centre myself before planning a route.

2016: once bug was reported, developer fixed bug quickly. 2 Star Review May 2016: Can't get voice navigation to come up on my Nexus 6P, so almost useless now (I've made comment on Github). Quiet routes much safer than Google Maps. I've figured out how to show rental bike places. 5 Star Review 2015: Strap phone to my arm and it talks me through the quiet back streets of London. Wish there was better integration with rental bike places showing empty slots near destination.

I'm hoping the tweaking of LiveRide removed some of its clunky instructions such as "get ready to....straight on". Will retest shortly & report back.

I used this App to navigate to the Limousin in France. It gave me low or no traffic routes that were great to cycle. Sometimes the routes took me on gravel roads, but these were often short and only added to the experience.

X70%
by X####:

Is this just for cycling on roads? It missed a tarmac path used by cyclists. Any way to include the usual cycle paths everyone uses?

T70%

I cant see the sustrans routes any more!

Great cycle routing, far better than Google, with useful options. User interface is not terribly intuitive unfortunately, but once you've learned how it works it works very well.

I really like that there is the option to pick quiet routes.

After clicking through to the online blog though the menu, every time I opened the app it would automatically open the blog page in separate window. Even if I switched windows back to the app, it would automatically send me back to the blog page. It was stuck in an endless loop & had to uninstall then reinstall the app to get back to the maps etc.

T70%
by T####:

Therefore 5 stars from me! Does everything I want and is really useful for non cycling map use as well. So glad the open crash bug was resolved!

H70%
by H####:

Firstly it Had trouble finding a route, then found a route of 40mis when I can do it in 30. Is it trying to stick to dedicated cycle routes? I think Google maps with voice guidance infinitely better

T70%
by T####:

I've tried planning routes near me with Strava, Ridewithgps and Komoot. Cyclestreets is the ONLY one that correctly plots the route any sane cyclist would use. I live 200m from NCN14 yet all the others start me off in the wrong direction to pick up NCN14 a few miles away. Only thing missing (and it is a biggie where I live, is elevation.) I did one route that I had planned and met a mountain (or at least it is a Mountain to a novice like me)
