About File Explorer (Root Add-On)

*** This add-on requires root access. It will not root your phone/tablet. ***

This add-on module enables the root file management features of FX File Explorer.

THIS IS ONLY AN ADD-ON, NOT AN APPLICATION. You must have FX File Explorer installed for it to work. This add-on will not appear in your application launcher. Its functionality is accessed within FX, by tapping the "System (Root)" item on the FX home screen. Please install FX and try it out before purchasing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx

*** CRITICAL INFORMATION: READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING ***

* YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE ROOT ACCESS: This module requires that you have root/superuser access on your phone/tablet. This module WILL NOT root your phone/tablet. If you do not have root access, this module is useless.

* Root access is intended for developers and knowledgeable enthusiasts ONLY. Improper use of any root access application can cause your phone/tablet to malfunction or become entirely non-operational. You assume all risk when using this or any root-access application to modify your device.

***********************************************************

General Features:

* Browse, modify, and copy files to and from the otherwise inaccessible /data/app (installed Applications) and /data/data (application data / configuration) directories.
* Search for files and folders by filename, size, date, and type.
* View and change permissions and ownership of files and folders.
* Remount the root (/) and /system partitions as read-write.
* Edit configuration files as root using FX's built-in text editor.
* View any binary or text file using FX's built-in binary/hex and text viewers.

Safety and Security Features:

As FX is designed to be an "everyday" file manager, special care was taken to ensure that adding root-access features to it would not detract from that capability. When the root module is installed, FX will still always use normal Android user access for file operations. The root module is only enabled when you specifically open the "System (Root)" catalog from the home screen of FX.

Security features can be configured to either warn you when you are using root access (the default behavior) or to require a PIN or password in order to use the root features. These features can also be disabled, but they're designed to be very unobtrusive (e.g. warnings are only displayed after a configurable interval of non-root use).

FX will display a warning on the home screen whenever the "/" or "/system" partitions have been remounted read-write, as it's a safety/security risk to not remount them as read-only when you're finished doing work as root.

FX features a recursive checksum calculator to allow manual checking of file integrity between two directories, and the system can even incorporate permissions and ownership data into its calculations to ensure two directories are identically configured. This feature can be accessed by long-pressing on a folder and tapping "Details", and then tapping "Calculate Checksum".

I had been using root explorer for 4 years. until I had to extract an apk from a gz on my phone because I was too lazy to get to the computer. I installed rar, but then I had 2 apps to do 1 thing. fast, intuitive, works. a bit of a hassle with reopening my bookmarks, but pretty good already. rooted s4 mini 4.4.2 stock.

1 year I????1⭐ this app????. IT STANK LIKE????! 2nite, on ????I re-✔'ed-out FX,&-dam! Nice! No network manager makes ESFILE #1 still.... FX HAS NO HOTSPOT... FAIL!

Q70%

Great App! Must have software. Never any errors and glides through folders like a hot knife through butter. Love the extra tools for a device too! 10/10 Thanks!

D70%

The app won't show up. The only thing it says is "uninstall" no Open or no shortcut for Samsungs. THIS SUCKS ALREADY

T70%
by T####:

Doesn't work with BusyBox v1.27.1 (v1.26.2 is okay). UPDATE: The problem has reversed - system BusyBox now works fine, but FX BusyBox fails "WARNING: linker: /data/data/nextapp.fx/app_Exec/busybox: unused DT entry: type 0x6ffffffe arg 0x1604"

by X####:

with this Root add-on, I can now deeply access my system of Samsung Galaxy Young S6310 Jellybean 4.1.2. Very safe to use with it's LOCK feature. I just wish it's password protected. Anyway, good job again NextApp, Inc. and thank you for making this add-on Free and NO Ads. Two-Thumbs Up!

by K####:

Well i watched some amazing videos talking about many marvelous things that could be a huge help to my phone but the thing is it doesn't show up so i'm a little bit disappointed but it's okey i'll Wait till they fix the problem,

K70%
by K####:

It's great this addon is free. I would not at all mind purchasing this for a couple bucks, since main app is updated with great design.

K70%
by K####:

Perfect. The people moaning it dosen't work need to learn about SuperSu. Stop winging wake the f**k up ;) it's great lol.

O70%
by O####:

I agree with TheAndroid because this doesn't work on my smartphone either which uses the useless KitKat OS, but its not "really" your falt FX that KitKat is useless.

R70%
by R####:

This is great, I loved everything about this File Explorer, it was better than my default, and compared to the file explorer, this might be even the best. I don't know why I uninstalled it.

I70%
by I####:

But it is too easy to break I accidentally pressed the wrong button and Broke the root addon so I reinstalled

K70%
by K####:

Doesn't work at all, whenever I try to use it within Fx I am asked for permission to grant it root privileges which I did but then it says "The operation could not be completed". I have emailed the developers about this but they never replied.

T70%
by T####:

It isn't setting owner properly on copy-paste files. Unfortunately attempts to set owner manually doesn't do the job - app still can't access them. Android 6.0, Galaxy S7. Can provide more details if needed.

G70%
by G####:

I know in 4.4 there this SD card limitation, but in ES explorer, when user has root access, it'll break such limitation and can do virtually anything with SD card. With FX, it still had that limitation (even when enabling Kitkat workaround and having root).

K70%
by K####:

Switched from ES Explorer. Nervous about the Baidu nonsense. Only thing I miss is the app uninstall feature, but from a UX perspective, head and shoulders above EX. Really enjoying it.

K70%
by K####:

I recommend this to anyone with a rooted system, though there was one concern I had recently, which required a few tricks to get it to work again. While I love the root feature, sadly an update broke it. When I formatted my Acer Iconia B1-270 to refresh it, the root addon wasn't working right. It kept giving me an error stating that /data/data/nextapp.fx/app_Exec/busybox wasn't found. I had managed to reinstall my root stuff on the tablet, and checked to find the file was in fact there, but didn't want to work. I simply copied the busybox provided by another installer into that directory, and things started working again. The tablet in question was an Intel chipset.

U70%

I am rooted. When I change it to read/write the lock icon opens up but when I try to edit the file it says the system is read only. What am I doing wrong?

R70%
by R####:

)"FX" viewer is the best for "kitkat" & earlier O-S phones though

R70%
by R####:

This explorer (along with the root addon of course) is definetly the best designed one out there but it has its issues. First of all it doesn't allow me to share files when in root explorer, for example sending an apk file over Bluetooth and sometimes it fails to start the share screen altogether. The SD fix works excellent but the other explorers work too when the write to SD fix is applied.

D70%
by D####:

I granted super user access twice and did the diagnostic test, yet I still can't open any folders in the root filesystem. Don't waste your time.

R70%
by R####:

Does exactly what it's says. Allows you to view all files & folders woth superuser permission. Requires root of course. Pay no mind to the bad reviews saying that they cannot open the app, or it does not work. It is a ADD-ON and requires FX FILE EXPLORER and ROOT. (says so right in the description)

R70%
by R####:

Enable System Status after performing any root function + mounting ro. A socket connection remains Live, will disconnect and reconnect every couple of minutes unless you kill the data leaking root service manually or by force. This app is highly vulnerable to remote code execution, should not be granted root, and the developer never responds when contacted via company email provided here in Play Store. Utter disappointment after using FX's collection of apps for so long.

T70%
by T####:

Am I missing the option to show hidden config files that start with a period? It's pointless having root access if it hides this kind of stuff.

Z70%
by Z####:

Love the design, functionality and everything else about this app, it's intuitive to use, doesn't dumb things down and allows you to do everything you'd expect. Love the calculation of file sizes and checksums too!! Love the "find big files" feature! Roms etc taking up my space needed to go. One thing, perhaps not at all app-related, I couldn't find out easily what was taking up 60% of my internalSD card, it says 60+% free on one screen, then root browser said ~30% free, ~60% used by "other" file types, but when I access that mount (mnt/sdcard) it only has the usual suspects (0, Android, obb, music, etc) but their sum space equals to less than 10% of the usage of that partition, so where's the other ~50% of the partitions data? Again probably not app related but if anyone reads this I'd love to know.

R70%
by R####:

No reply from support email at all. Please update FX File Explorer so it works with Portable Storage in Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). It cannot even see the SD Card.

R70%
by R####:

Don't work. Just says 'this operation could not be completed' absolute rubbish.

R70%
by R####:

Used to work great, but root functionality has failed in the last several updates. I don't think it's coming back, so I have to use AntTek Explorer instead for root work. A shame, as otherwise I prefer FX.

D70%
by D####:

For some reason, after remounting /system rw so I can edit build.prop, I can't remount read-only (it says "operation not permitted") Luckily I still have my img on internal storage so I can fix the bootloop. It's worked fine before, nothing against the file manager itself.

R70%
by R####:

The cloud storage connection module is definitely flaky. Once they work out that issue and make it rock solid, I would like it if it connected to more providers. One of my go-to apps.

Update: I have been waiting for a very long time for this developer to implement ability to preview images (thumbnails) on SMB shares but it looks like this is being ignored while other file managers have adopted this capability...I am off to using Solid Explorer....

I don't understand why this file browser doesn't get more attention, consider it is every bit as good as the root explore.

T70%

Doesn't work on my Galaxy tab 3 10" running 4.4.2. Opening system (root) brings up a message 'The operation could not be completed'. Have checked my root logs and the app was granted permission correctly. Not sure what's wrong. 5 stars if fixed, works on my other device perfectly

T70%
by T####:

Had this app forever 2+ years. This app has a beautiful material design layout and is very easy to use. The only problem is that the root tools does not work at all, even if I mount system as RW it still denied permission to manage system files, I have the root addon. I have used other root explorer apps and they do handle modification of system files. The only reason why I'm keeping this app is because for non root it's the best. Sorry for the 1 star

T70%

Love that this is a plugin that is built into the application framework. Does exactly what you would expect a root explorer to do.
