About FoodSwitch New Zealand

Description:
Packaged foods can be surprisingly high in salt, fat and sugars. Use FoodSwitch for healthy grocery shopping and make better food choices for you and your family.

Take three simple steps to better health by reducing high levels of fat, salt and sugars in you and your family’s diet.
1. Scan barcodes of packaged foods with your camera and see what’s in the food you’re eating.
2. See similar foods that are healthier based on established nutrition criteria.
3. Share your healthier food choices with your friends via Facebook, Twitter or email.

FoodSwitch comes with handy filters to suit different health needs:
- FoodSwitch Classic is for anyone looking to make generally healthier food choices.
- SaltSwitch has been designed to help people lower their salt intake and is great for people with, or being treated for, high blood pressure.
- GlutenSwitch is great for people with coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance who are looking for gluten-free products.

Features:
Immediate, easy-to-understand nutritional information from a large, independent, NZ packaged food products database.
Simple colour-coded ratings for 4 key food components (total fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt).
Get a list of healthier choices for the food you scan and switch to healthier choices where available.
Save your healthy favourites on personalised shopping lists.
Export your lists of healthier choices or share them with friends and family.

Nothing has changed. Still wants me to update which doesn't download. Still needs 3 photos of 380g jar of vegemite still offers no options to marmite. Get your act together.

X70%
by X####:

App claims an update needs downloading (a 14Mb update) that will happen while App is in use. Only nothing downloads. Message to App Developer: run updates via the App store, not via the App accessing a 3rd party server

X70%
by X####:

Never lets me do an update. Always says there is one but never downloads

This app was great. Tells me I have update available. This update doesn't download . Data getting worse. Bad reduction in better options. Whatever you paid the developer it was far too much. Very annoyed deleted and reinstalled program. NO CHANGE. Asked to photo a jar of vegemite for goodness sakes. Now asks for 3 photos of a 750g pack of Weet-Biz. How anyone gives better than 1 star beggars belief.

D70%

Very simple use and look forward to updates to make it more versatile to use, like adding alternatives to a specific list made and also a compare option

Loved it:-);-):-D

D70%
by D####:

Love that it doesn't just tell you something is bad but gives you better options. Would be great if it had allergy info. Eg you could choose what you want to avoid and the app would tell you if the food contains it. I'm allergic to honey which isn't as easy as nuts or gluten to identify in product ingredients

U70%
by U####:

Why is it that after updates to improve apps they are often worse. Now each time I start it it hangs and then says an update will download in the background but never does. - App is Broken

D70%
by D####:

The updates are rubbish I contacted the developers was told to uninstall and reinstall. Updates ruin apps . I have a Samsung s5.

So easy. Such a simple concept that will help educate many. And its nz homegrown. Cant find a food just take 3 photos they will add it. Brilliant.

Seriously, first item I scan says it has 3.4g of sugar per 100g. But it completely leaves out the more important and massive 44.7g/100 of carbohydrate. Pretty misleading! Add carbohydrates and it might be worth using.

You know how one day you finish a conversation with that would be awesome someone should totally make that...

Disappointed Marmite is not listed. Did the 3 photo thing about 4 months ago.

This is a great app, especially as it's free to download! Very informative & easy to use.

If you're buying items with barcodes then its a good app to have, assuming the supermarket stocks the alternatives.

Q70%
by Q####:

Database increasing and getting more successful scans. The suggested alternatives are great and traffic lights are brilliant. Can't wait for them to be standard on all products across the supermarket shelves!

Have just started a healthy buzz and have no idea at all about healthy vs crappy. This app has helped me make smarter choices about the food that I buy

Q70%

There has been so much time between now and the last update. I bet there are a huge number of submissions waiting to be added. I like how simple it is to use, but more nutritional information would be good - Identifying common allergens (milk, gluten, soy, nuts, eggs, fructose etc), and whether or not a product is vegetarian. I think this has great potential and for many people, could become an essential shopping tool.

Really like it. As a diabetic if you add total carbohydrates it will be perfect.

Just keep forgetting to use it.

For those of us who need to carb count for insulin doses please please please add in total carbs!

Q70%

I love this app. It takes the hard work out of label reading. It is color coded for GI values. You can create favorite lists. Yay !! To top it off you can be proactive and help out by taking photos and it will add the food item to the database. I am diabetic and this app will be the best way for me to make sure I make good choices. Brilliant and comprehensive.
