Great app! I shadowed an expensive, integrated Ray marine system in a coastal trip of some 500 miles and Opencpn was dead on - and easier to operate. Would like to see Active Captain integrated. Also Squid dio won't download POIs. Following bigdumbboat and it appears fix is known. Need to push out the update! But other than that, great. Samsung Galaxy Tab A6

Since i knew the desktop version and since I saw many positive reviews I paid the price and tested the app. One feature is lacking (quilting of charts). There is a chart problem where the manufacturer demands a munimum size where the charts are visible. If you'd have a 2m monitor it would work. To use ENC charts i set the size of the monitor to 2m and i use the maximum size for the toolbar. Settings for official charts (ECDIS) should not have influence on settings for a inflated phone app. With some custom settings/hacks it works for me.

I was unable to find any useful information that would allow adding any map. The website is filled with page does not exist messages. This appears to be simply a means to steal $9.95. Google Play should review this app and probably remove it. I went so far as to load a version on a windows PC. That was equally unhelpful. The PC was v4.4. The android device was Samsung TM-280. The forum appears to be disfunctional.

Now our Samsung S4 Cellphones and Notepad can run routes using the on board GPS. A very compact and inexpensive solution and a great asset in the cockpit. Looking forward to getting Nmea data with AIS on the tablet which OpenCPN will do once we have wifi + AIS on board. Thank you!

An android version of the best open source chart plotter, navigation software. This version has a lot of additions (compared to free one in store) and support from the author. I am so happy I found it!

I installed this app on my 8" Galaxy Tab Active. (Android 5.5.1). I had to install the charts in the sandbox for them to update properly. My paths are: "storage/extSdCard/Android/Data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files/NOAA Charts/ENC" and "storage/extSdCard/Android/Data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files/NOAA Charts/RNC". After making that adjustment it is smooth sailing. I'll check more functionality after I get my Vesper AIS installed. Looking forward to NMEA data access and AIS overlays on OpenCPN.

An essential addition to any yacht, I can't imagine sailing without. Plus there is endless support through the forum if you run into problems, though it's so intuitive I can't image even a beginner would need much help. Additionally buying this version as opposed to installing the free version encourages the developer to continue the good work. Also running the exact same software on my tablet, phone and laptop is awesome.

This is an amazing first release of the Sailors' favourite charting application. Get yourself a copy of CM93 charts, or any of the other supported formats, and you are away. And for a fraction of the cost of nasty Navionics with their annual subscription for out of date and inaccurate charts. I am enjoying the high resolution scans of paper charts for my area (Philippines) in KAP format - the most accurate available. Sat pics also display perfectly. Performance is amazing, almost never crashes. Most of the PC functionality is working already, and doubtless more to follow. Works beautifully on both my tablet and phone.

Hi Dave, It looked good to me, so I went ahead and got it yesterday for my new cellphone, a 6 inch display quadcore with just 1Gb of RAM running Android 6.0 that costed just 99€. I have been spending MANY hours trying to load my charts, same charts that work perfect with my win10/laptop running OpenCPN 4.6.1 but it wasn't working even if I was telling the program wher my charts were located. Not until I PLACED MY CHARTS EXACTLY in the RIGHT DIRECTORY. I have placed "mycharts" directory inside the device storage under this path: /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.opencpn/mycharts .

3 stars only because while it works perfectly on my Samsung S7 Edge, it keeps crashing all the time on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. Such a pity, I was obviously more inclined to use this app on my Tab rather than my smartphone. Dave, are you able to do something to improve stability on the Tab S2 please? KR, Francois

Many people ask about the benefits of the Paid version of OpenCPN over the free. I can give a few reasons why it is much better. 1. Ability to store charts on SD-card. 2. Vastly more energy efficient - the app will sleep when screen is off (this is a configurable parameter). 3. Plug ins such as GRIB viewer, tides etc available. 4. A better user interface with more functionality and configurations.

Refreshing to see this app on Android. Used it for many years on Windows. Would like to see the ability for it to read Transas charts and also get the Climatology plugin. Captain Ian Engelbrecht - Worldwide Yacht Deliveries

Yesterday and this morning the app just became un-usable, crashing all the time. Now it seems ok.. go figure! I am not out sailing...i am happy to send logs if i can find how to.turn them on

Love opencpn on laptop and Raspberry pi 3 All my attempts so far to install charts on Android version have failed, CM93 Phone Wileyfox swift. Free version and this paid for version same result , point charts at folder containing charts and app becomes non responsive. Initial 1 star updated to 5 star, after checking on forum discovered it read/write privileges on Android needed amending. Thanks for link Dave

Happy to have the sanctioned OpenCPN Android app. Streaming all sorts of NMEA data to/from a Raspberry Pi 3. Comforting redundancy. All I have to do now is get off the dock and go cruising.

Brilliant app,, works very well and links straight up with my inbuilt gps(samsung s4). very accurate and just needs a few more of the plugins to make it identical to the pc version. One small problem i have is the text appear/disappear button is not on the top(or anywhere) ofthe app..so text stuff on the map cant be seen....any ideas developers please.

Have been using PC version for years so I paid for Android version to support developer and give something back. BUT cant upgrade from 1.08 to 1.09, says device is incompatible even though it is same device. Read a few posts with same problem, tried to register on forum but did not receive activation email. Yes i did check spam as recommended, so nowhere left to post to inform developer. maybe related to google play store, however I'm left with a paid app that i cant upgrade. UPDATE: ver 1.0.10 is compatable again with my Blackberry, must be the 'Disable USB Host mode compatibility filter.' that did it - Thanks Dave. Excellent support. Excellent App.

As of now I had several captains attempt to download a map. I have tried for several hours. Your manual does not address this, only how to do this on a laptop. At this point I nearly have all the instructions memorized. Can you give me detailed, specific to a nexus7 instructions? If this is not going to work, I am requesting a refund as it is not stated the app will not function on a Nexus7. Preferably, a fix. /////Update Accurate and specific instructions were provided by Dave. So far working fine. Upgrading to five stars because of service.

I bought this pay version because I could not figure out how to pair with Garmin Glo Bluetooth GPS on the free version. (FREE version also available on Google Play. But even the paid version could not be paired to the Bluetooth GPS, despite the details saying...it provides BLUETOOTH remote GPS support Program too small. Tried on A Samsung S6 edge Phone. Near impossible to change settings due to small layout not showing all fields. Depth too small to read, even after zooming in, the Depth indication gets tiny to read Needs more work, before paying for it. Why is there a FREE one that appears to be identical? I really wanted this to work as a backup to my Laptop and Ipad, but more work needed.

Installed on asus zen pad okay and instantly recognized the internal GPS. It refuses to recognize the cm93 charts I have been using on PC laptops for years. Also there is a few seconds window of opportunity to select between raster, vector or cm93 when the app first boots. Then the option disappears and can't be brought back. Lastly, the help file appears to reprinted from the Windows version and isn't useful. I uninstalled the app. Too bad, it's great on the old laptop.....update, I stumbled onto the solution. My cm93 files were corrupted in transfer somehow. I should've compared the size of the transferred files to the original to make sure they were the same. Now open cpn is as wonderful as always. The raster,vector,cm93 menu appears as needed when an area is covered by more than one chart format, therefore it's a non problem. The help page could be much better and the support forum is inaccessible to me, but the app itself is great. Therefore I'm piling on the stars...

Crashes really regularly. Auto detect for com ports does not work so I cannot connect my AIS like on I can on the Windows version. The only difference between the free and paid version is the dashboard plug-in. Oh, whoopie! I should have stuck with the free version until the developers get their act together.
