About Ornithopedia Europe

Ornithopedia Europe offers a searchable list of all 1144 birds in the Western Palearctic (greater European area) in 17 languages.

The App comes with over 3200 pictures, 29.000 streaming sound files and 2500 streaming Youtube videos and much more. You can also include your own content (pictures or sounds) seamlessly. Additional features include a search by visual characteristics of a bird and an Ornitho-Trainer, for training to recognize bird features of common birds. Currently in testing is also a feature for making lists.
The Western Palearctic is one of the eight ecozones (a region that shares similar plant and wildlife) of the world. It centers and includes all of Europe with nearby parts of western Asia and northern parts of Africa.

You also have the possibility to get more content by downloading free modules. The modules currently available are:
- High quality version of all 3200 pictures (+ 161 MB-440 MB, depending on the module chosen)
- 4 Different Sound modules, with between 600 and 3000 Sound files (+ 130 MB-1.1 GB, depending on the module chosen)
- Offline Wikipedia article for all birds (+ 3-50 MB each, depending on the language selected)

This field guide / hobby ornithology / educational birding App was published in August of 2013.
Everything is for free and all resources used are creative commons or equally free licensed and attributed as well as possible.
Streaming content obviously needs an internet connection to work, if you don't want those features you can disable them.

Feedback of any kind is welcome. Wishes of features to be added or annoying quirks you want fixed, just drop me a mail and I see if there is something that can be done.

Cheers and have fun with the App.

The app has some elements of the graphical user interface and all of the bird names translated according to the IOC World bird list 4.1 into 19 languages. But there is still some to be done.
If you are a native speaker of one of those that miss some translation (for buttons, text etc.) and want to contribute, give comments or improve the grammar feel free to contact me per mail. Cheers!

This app swoops down and takes other apps to ground before plucking and devouring them. Good work dev and thanks for providing a way to access shared knowledge. Tweet tweet.

Perfect for training to identifying birds by their sounds. Nice design, easy to find what you want. Good that you can download sounds etc. for offline use. I love this app! :)

Nice app. I'd love it if the keyboard appeared when you used the search field, but otherwise very useful and quite extensive in species and content.

This is a really incredible app, by far the best app I have ever used of any kind. I use it daily from personal interest, despite not being in any way an ornithologist or birdwatcher. Free and wonderful. All resources can be downloaded onto an sd card so it can work entirely offline. Other app developers should take note of this... space is cheap, especially on Android devices with removable external storage. It would be nice in the training section if there were pre-compiled lists of just difficult-to-distinguish birds to help you learn to distinguish between similar-looking species. Thank you for putting so much into this. Resources like this get people more engaged in our bird life and natural environment more generally, and surely they then consequently care more about the conservation of habitats and migration routes, some of which are under threat.

I've been looking for an Android app that rivals the brilliant Collins BIrd Guide 2nd edition iOS app primarily for the bird calls and songs as that is my weakness, and Ornithopedia is the close as it gets. I've been using this app for the past month during the start of the autumn migration and it's been brilliant. My bird call and song identification has certainly improved with this app. Thank you very much and expect a donation from me to this worthy cause.

A bit worried to see the first two listed habitats to be 'forrest' and 'wodd'. Really?? Couldn't get past the primary school spelling mistakes.

A bit beta-ish but I can sort of get it to do everything I want

Very impressive - a comprehensive and well thought out app ! Have downloaded the picture and song modules , so can use it offline , as the mobile connection where I live is poor . Well done to all involved !

Nice quizzes, very helpful to learn the names and sounds. It would be great to have a "give me the answer" button in the quizz because sometimes you really don't know.

This is the future of bird apps. With about only 10,000 bird species all over the world, ALL information about them should be free, easily accessible and always updated. And this application is a great start for such a vision. Please add the Greek language :)

Very good but there is room for improvement in the user interface. (Added in response to invitation to elaborate:). 1. The interface is not attractive. 2. In the Search by Appearance results lists the photographs are shown large and at low resolution even though I have selected Small list pictures in Settings. If I am trying to identify a bird by song then I have separately to download many distinct sound files and listen to each one. This is inconvenient because I am not likely to have a Wi-Fi connection at that moment. Some of the recordings are of poor quality. It would be better if the files were ranked by quality and there were a way to download the best recording of the call, alarm call, etc., all at once.
