About PlantNet Plant Identification

Pl@ntNet is an image sharing and retrieval application for the identification of plants.

It is developed by scientists from four French research organisations (Cirad, INRA, Inria and IRD), and the Tela Botanica network, with the financial support of Agropolis fondation.

Among other features, this free app helps identifying plant species from photographs, through a visual recognition software. Plant species that are well enough illustrated in the botanical reference database can be easily recognized.

The number of species and the number of images used by the application evolve with contributions of end users to the project.

It doesn't allow the identification of ornamental plants. It works even better than the pictures submitted are focused on one organ. Pictures of tree leaves on uniform background provide the most relevant results.

If you correctly identify a species, you can participate to the project by submitting your observation with the "contribution" button. These contributions subject to a moderation process will be validated collaboratively.

A lot of what I photograph does not come up in the subsequent search. Most recent was an oak acorn with not a single oak suggestion in the plant list. It's a good hit or miss, sometimes it works great, sometimes not so much, but for me when I go to contribute the photograph after having confirmed the species elsewhere, it hasn't been taking my identification. Not sure whether it's just to submit photos for others to identify or what. Could be a very useful app one day, but right now, field guides and google seem to be getting better results, albeit at a slower pace.

Love it. Many, many years ago a friend and I were enjoying an afternoon, drinking wine under my arbor, admiring my hard work done throughout my many gardens. I said it would be nice to have something like this app, that you could instantly identify a plant that you find in your garden. Sure, I know the basics, like the poisonous ones to stay away from. But, to be able to identify plants, that pop up in your garden, would be a wonderful thing. Thanks for providing such an app.

Uses a lot of data! I was first amazed how well this app could identify flowers and plants but when I received a data usage warning from my phone showing this app alone took 70Mb of data in less than an hour, which is what I must use in one day... Ouch! I cannot afford to use a data eater app like this!

N70%
by N####:

Works very well, but contribution images really shouldn't be saved "client-side." If my phone breaks, then all contributions disappear entirely. A small server would handle small pictures really well.

Terrible!!! I want to identify plants around my new home... I have kids and pets and there are berry trees and bushes on my property that I want to know if they are dangerous/poisonous... followed the instructions and upon uploading the image this dumb app makes you choose the right one from a list... I do not know enough to know that information and is why I'm using the app in the first place!!!

Great app. Ended up I had a papaya plant growing in my garden. Thanks to this app I didnt have to spend weeks trying to identify it, or worse yet kill a good plant. Once i knew what it was, my friend said Oh Yeah, I threw the papaya seed in the garden.

Completely wrong, on every single try. Plants I knew exactly what they were, didn't even come up. Stems, flowers and leaf pictures, and it failed on every account. What a waste.

N70%
by N####:

I wanted to know a plant by its leaf shape. A guide to shape should be the first thing, not just great lists to plough through first.

Was curious about a tree in my backyard, and after googling to no avail I tried this app. One photo of the flower was all it took for an instant identification.

N70%

This app has proven useful on a number of occasions, though it is often not entirely accurate. When the accuracy is questionable, it has generally helped point me in a direction that does answer my questions.

N70%
by N####:

Unfortunately, this app does not do what it's advertised to do. I bought a plant, tag fell off, forgot what it is. Took a photo, can find no way to upload. I tried searching the database, typed in the word Mum, nothing comes up AT ALL. It was not my understanding that it was "specifically" for wild plants. As a budding gardener, I had high hopes but although the app shows beautiful pictures and names a lot of flowers I won't ever plant, pretty sure I just chose the wrong application. No very intuitive either.

N70%
by N####:

This app is so helpful! It's so easy to find what your looking for especially when you're clueless about what it is. And being able to contribute to it and see the other similar plants to confirm was great!

N70%
by N####:

Great app. I would love it even more if they updated it to include foraging information. Also the only problems I've come across is identifying mushrooms but those can be difficult in general.

B70%
by B####:

Could not identify plants that other apps were able to identify, and cannot delete my contributions! Which means I might be getting unwarranted replies.

Y70%
by Y####:

Tried to identify the type of pear tree in my garden. It didn't offer any pear tree, but every exotic fruit from mango and guava to black walnut! Disappointed.

N70%
by N####:

OK many bad identifications it could be very misleading. Also few a genuine wild flowers-mostly garden cultivars.

N70%

This app works really well for me. Sometimes it can be confusing at first but I normal find and identify the plant I found.

X70%

The app works great! I planted a papya seed a month ago and forgot about it. When I noticed the plant,it was 18 in. tall and without the app I would not have been able to identify the species.

O70%
by O####:

Out of all the apps I've looked up this is the most in-depth and useful. It could offer more information on plant specifications but over all it is accurate at identification which is most important and offers the minimum nessicery information to research the species further.

N70%
by N####:

Not always 100% right but a very useful app nevertheless. Sometimes can't identify the plant but that could possibly be the quality/clarity of the submitted photograph.

J70%
by J####:

I took a picture of a peace Lily leaf and had to choose one of over 10 different plants. If I had not known what it was, the task would have been impossible.

T70%

It has been remarkably reliable though it sometimes requires multiple attempts before the correct result is available. It would be very helpful if the editor function allowed for a simple crop and submit option.

N70%

Great app. I've always been in interested in plants, but whenever I had spotted a new one to me I had no way of identifying it. This is amazing, total game changer. Cheers!

LOVE this app! Im an outdoorsy person, but am occasionally stumped w ID-ing certain species and this app has been so very helpful and user friendly

Great app. Had a plant growing in the garden that we could not identify, couple of pictures submitted and confirmed in a flash! ( Its a Cornilian Cherry). Super!

W70%

I had a small number of a pretty plant pop up in a bed of wildflowers and the picture matching worked great. I actually tried to match it off my memory before I took a picture and found it easily with the many identification methods. I love it!

I'm a very casual "sees plant, wonders what it is" type - not scientific by any means - and this app is great for my minor curiosities! Very easy to use and I've never had problems or bugs.

G70%

Awesome! Took a photo in the app of something that mysteriously started growing in a houseplant. The first possibility the app offered seems like it must be it. Very cool!

I70%

Excellent app apart from one thing: I accidentally "contributed" several wrongly identified photos before I fully understood how the app worked and they were approved by the community despite being wrong.

Q70%
by Q####:

This app does not identify mushrooms. It only identifies plant, flowers, fruit and trees. This app has yet to do so....

J70%

It isn't perfect, but it can accurately identify an incredible number of plants! This app is awesome for hiking around and identifying the plants you find on trails.

S70%

I've always been interested in learning what wildflowers I have, but I have a terrible memory, and can't always find what I'm looking at in my books. This app is outstanding! Highly recommend for the novice gardener!

N70%
by N####:

Easy to use and is a nice way to learn different plants. I think it would be nice to have a text box to describe or give information when submitting an unknown plant to help others figure out what it is.

N70%

Instantly recognised plants, includes information linked to Wikipedia. Helped a lot. Easy to use and navigate. I suppose as you provide your own photographs and location it can only get better.

Nice app, does the job well at identifying random plants. The community seems to be improving upon the database which should help it identify better in the future. Thank you and blessings! Hemp Future

Do you have south African plants? I see options for other countries but not SA... App not very user friendly

I70%

Rarer plants are not in the database. Hope we can work together to expand it.

N70%

Just started and so far seems to work in common flowers. A bit surprised that correctly identified corn flower by Latin name but common name blue cap is unknown to me although I find can be used for sea Holly. It might be a good idea within app to be able to submit suggested corrections. It would also be useful if the flower photos included more leaves as an aid to correct identification.

Y70%

It is a gud app but it could have been better. I spend a lot of time on this app scrolling the News section. ~ I think if a Comment section could be added under the pics in News section it would be very helpful for the users. People could ask questions to each other regarding the plants and share their experience among the community. This app has potential to become as successful as facebook and it emphasizes on better topic i.e Plants! :)

I'm such a nerd for plants that I open it and play it like a video game. I call it: "guess that plant!"
