About IEEE Computer

“THIS APP PROVIDES A PRINT-REPLICA OF THE MAGAZINE PAGES, THUS SMALLER DEVICES WILL REQUIRE GREATER ZOOMING. IT IS DESIGNED FOR TABLET USE ONLY, AND WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY ON MOST SMARTPHONES.”

Computer is the flagship magazine of the IEEE Computer Society. For more than 40 years, developers, researchers, and managers have relied on Computer for timely, peer-reviewed coverage of research, trends, best practices, and changes in the profession for all areas of computing and computer science. Computer Digital expands that mission by enhancing the print edition with multimedia and additional content. As the largest of IEEE’s 38 societies, the IEEE Computer Society is dedicated to advancing the theory and application of computing and information technology and serving the information and career-development needs of researchers and professionals with books, conferences, conference publications, magazines, online courses, software development certifications, standards, and technical journals.

I wouldn't say its as bad as these people say. It works, its a little clunky and a little laggy but I never had a crash problem getting my 'password' sent to my email.

Hideous. Eight weeks after I renewed, I finally got the application with my first issue. That right there is unacceptable performance in the 21st century. A lot of my magazines have gone digital and every single one has done a better job than this. I'm trying to read this on a seven-inch tablet and it is painful. The Computer Society has obviously made no effort whatsoever to adapt the publication to digital format. An absolute disgrace. I am canceling my membership. I didn't even want to give it a single star, but is was necessary in order to submit the review.

Going from print to digital, keeping the same format as the printed format is the worse way to do it. I will not renew my membership next year if this horrible format is not improved.

I gave up my print copy and had to sign up for qmags, only to get two downloaded mags? The latest issue should be available, but I don't see it under downloads. Don't advertise your app if we're all forced to download mags directly from your website anyway.

Look at all the permissions this app needs just to access a less-usable version of content already at the IEEE site. Pointless for the user, but a goldmine of personal information for Qmags.

S70%

Why does this app need access to phone call data and need to be able to list running apps????????

G70%
by G####:

Perhaps some of the low ratings for this app are based on an older version. The app installed without issue and I was able to perform the send password function. Beware that the password for this app is different from your IEEE password and they must store your password in the CLEAR because they are able to send you your plaintext password in an email. Use a simple unique and unimportant password here!

It is hard to read because of small print. Zooming in is a pain. PLEASE FIX.

I normally don't download apps with a rating of less than 3 stars, but since this is the official way to view the IEEE's magazine, I thought I'd give it a try anyway. Two major problems: the app often refuses to download anything - somewhat irritating because that's basically all it is supposed to do, and my password gets EMAILED to me in PLAIN-TEXT - meaning there's no hashing going on. The fact that the IEEE - an organization that publishes papers on computer security - is satisfied with the quality of this app is... Disturbing.

S70%
by S####:

Not only does the app suck but I can't get my electronic magazines from the website.

The app accepts my user name (email) and password with no complaint, but fails to display any magazines. No errors, no log entries, just an empty bookshelf. What gives?

S70%
by S####:

Requires a "Digital Magazine password, NOT your IEEE password", but crashes as soon as the "Send Password" button is pressed. The IEEE has long had problems with passwords - requiring login via a Flash app that won't work with KeePass or other password safes, then - predictably - having user passwords stolen, but this is an embarrassment to a professional organisation. Edited to add - if you set your password at the qmags site, the app still crashes when the "Submit" button is touched. Useless.

Pretty useless on 7in tablets since it displays printed pages with no reformatting and no ability to zoom. Much too small to read.

M70%

Was a tolerably app and a nice way to read the magazine. Now asking for an abusive level of intrusion.

This is a great program. High marks for being easy to use and sleek. I am using a nexus 7 and it works fine. Ignore the negative comments and get reading. As a side note, or is not hard to use if you follow the directions. Open the app, enter your email, click send password, open your email and copy the password and enter it into the app. Took me 2 minutes. Otherwise, figure it out before you leave negative feedback. This is COMPUTER MAGAZINE.
