This app is designed specifically to read Sentinel smartcards as part of Network Rail’s Sentinel system.

The app allows anyone to check their own smartcard and also allows authorised card checkers to authenticate their team as well as undertake spot checks and check TVPs (Track Visitor Permits).
Sentinel cards can be checked by scanning the QR code on the front of the card or TVP, or via NFC where this is enabled on your device. To read a Sentinel card via NFC, when prompted hold it in contact with the rear of your device until the card has been read successfully.
This app can be used with any Android smartphone or tablet (Android 4 and above) with a rear-facing autofocus camera and NFC. Sentinel smartcards can be read securely using NFC, as these devices read information from the smartcard’s microchip electronically. Internet access is not required to read smartcards using NFC. The smartcard’s microchip can be checked using NFC with no internet availability whatsoever. However if internet access is available when reading a card using NFC, any updates for that card from the new Sentinel database are transferred automatically to the smartcard.
All smartcard checking activities are uploaded automatically to the database when an internet connection is present or will be uploaded later when connectivity is restored by re-launching the app.
To use NFC, make sure it’s enabled in the settings of your smartphone before you attempt to read any cards.
The application is easy to use:
1. Open the app.
2. If using NFC, hold the new Sentinel smartcard to the back of your device OR click the QR code button and focus the camera on the card’s QR code.
3. Confirm the sponsor for today.
4. Depending on the card presented, either the card itself will be shown or a menu of options will be displayed for authorised card checkers.
5. Follow the on screen options (more detailed instructions on using the app are available at www.railsentinel.co.uk)

Super secure Android/Apple Pay NFC, takes half a second to tap. Sentinal card takes like 10 seconds... Doesn't add up. Why's it so slow

Absolutely terrible, this app crashes every time I have scanned people in, I then have to risk assess them the next night, as it thinks they have worked over 12 hours. Come on NWR, you are saying it is mandatory to scan in, so get this app working correctly!!

The new update is poor and should have been extensively trialed before release. The app periodically stops working which in turn causes PTS staff to disappear after they have been logged in therefore not able to log staff out. Also shows staff not having enough rest requiring a risk assessment when they haven't been on track for more than 24hrs.

Keeps crashing when using NFC and once logged in and the app crashes you cannot log people out. To log myself out I have to "start shift" and go through the location to allow me to sign out and do the same for each person. Takes a long time to add everyone's time for rest place, planned shift etc. Adds more responsibility to the Coss/swl that already have massive responsibility. Also adds yet more time on the signing in process. Locations need updating as not accurate and doesn't show REBs or FTN nodes

But it has started crashing constantly, as has the QR version. Made me look a bit incompetent when cossing the health and safety bod on track last night. It has only been in the last few days it has been failing.

I've now re-installed Android 4.4 (Kitkat) and updated goggle play services to v5, app back to normal, now reading cards with no problems with NFC.

Xperia Z2 - difficulty reading the card, repeated mis-reads. Tried using my xperia T (lt30p) which is a tested and approved phone, and I still had repeated mis-reads. This needs to be 100% reliable - fix it!

Doesn't work - just wasted a load of money buying new phones for everyone! Doesn't work with Samsung S3 Mini smart phone running latest software and NFC chip. We purchased approx 65 handsets with NFC for the specific purpose of using this app and it doesn't work, please sort it out.

Samsung XCover user. NFC works only with the first person, subsequent sign in has to be using the QR code which frequently crashes the app. Location details are sorely lacking, why not use GPS? Cannot edit shift times once confirm button pressed, this is wrong and fields should be uneditable once safety briefing done only. There needs to be a Feedback button in app, to get direct to the devs. All in all, badly implemented, unintuitive, and with no user centered feedback system.
