About Smithsonian Eclipse 2017

Our local star, like you've never seen it before!

The Smithsonian Solar Eclipse app is your interactive guide to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, giving Americans a front row seat to a rare celestial event. It is a free app, made possible by funding from the Smithsonian Women's Committee (SWC), with content from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and powered by SkySafari 5, the next-generation award-winning astronomy app for Android.

Watch a live NASA stream of the eclipse as it travels across the continental United States, calculate your view with our interactive eclipse map and get a virtual view in our eclipse simulator. While you wait, check out some of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's solar research and get even closer to the sun with near-live views from space.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is one part of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where leading astronomers ask, test, and answer some of humanity’s greatest questions.

Since 1890, SAO has conducted solar research, including the study of solar radiation and the solar constant.

Today our telescopes and instruments send back high resolution images of the Sun and other data to study phenomena including how the solar atmosphere is energized, the topology of solar features, and space weather, to name just a few. During the 2017 solar eclipse, SAO’s AIR-Spec instrument will ride along a unique aircraft built for scientific research in order to measure plasma emission from the sun.

Our solar research is more than a century in the making, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

The Smithsonian Eclipse app was made possible by a grant through the Smithsonian Women's Committee . SWC supports the Smithsonian through volunteer fundraising, grant awards, and public relations.

You have one MAJOR bug in your Android version. Your times are all off by an hour. You've got it right on iOS; we've held them side-by-side. Same everything, except iOS correctly has 2:42:10, and Android says 3:42:10.

N70%
by N####:

Interactive map is locked to portrait orientation and takes up only 20% of screen at most and can not be expanded. Just too small. Update: developers responded and made map expandable - much easier to read now. Thanks!

THIS APP IS AWESOME now I'm going to show off to my friends in school in eclipse day. Devs can you plz add a GPS tracking on the app with a countdown to eclipse totality in your area. It would be awesome and I'll tell my friends about the app. They are going to LOVE IT!!!

G70%
by G####:

I entered a new location on the interactive map but the observation details in the lower section did not update. I'll open a trouble ticket as given in another entry. 25 days and counting...

R70%
by R####:

This will be very helpful. I know it's a bit late for this year, but for future versions, it would have been great if a map including live cloud cover could be included -- so that we can pick the best viewing location on the big day

Corrected. Thanks. -- I'm looking at locations in TN, and your app has totality in 3.30 time frame, and everywhere else has same location at 2.30 edt. -- Time calcs appear to be off by an hour. Or did eastern time suddenly become -3 UTC instead of -4?

N70%
by N####:

I love in a totality area, right on the blue line, and when it asks permission to use my location it puts me somewhere in Oregon, not in Casper, Wyoming.

N70%
by N####:

Great app except it is giving me the countdown for Oregon instead of my viewing location in Missouri. Am I missing something?

T70%
by T####:

Great free app. GPS location is a bit off, compared to Google maps that is dead on, but is still good enough for the eclipse.

N70%
by N####:

Very nice, intuitive app. I can't think of anything an eclipse watcher would need that this doesn't have.

T70%
by T####:

Great except that the countdown says Oregon and I'm in Kentucky. Tried putting a pin down but there's no way to save your location. Would be nice if countdown could be customized to the location you want, and had settings options. That's why it's 3 stars instead of 5.

Dev/support teams are active and respond to requests and problems, in addition to making a wonderful app. Thank you and kudos to the dev and support teams!

This app is a great tool to have for tomorrow's eclipse. Since I'm not in an area where I can see the full eclipse and will not be able to see it, at least I have a good app to refer to. Thanks.

Interactive Eclipse Map still fails to load and event data still does not update. Display is full screen and still covers up the notification bar. Samsung Note 4 w/v6.0.1

The interactive map loads and then goes away, leaving me with just text information

I was looking for the most interactive app...cant get better than this!!! I can see exactly what it will look like from my home and it will give me the weather forecast too!!!

Q70%

Great and truly free map that uses your gps for interactive information. Much better than other "free" solutions that require payment for gps use

Seems to have all I need for a simple observer

In Boise time is off by one hour. It says greatest coverage at 12:21 MDT rather than 11:21 as it is supposed to be.
