About Aedict Japanese Dictionary

An english-japanese dictionary which uses Jim Breen's EDICT data. Does not require japanese keyboard. Internet access is used only to download the dictionary - the application itself works offline. Features: radical search, kanjipad, kanji analysis, SKIP search, optionally shows romaji instead of hiragana/katakana

Developing Aedict is not free. Please consider purchasing an improved version of Aedict (with new GUI, supporting new dictionary formats) for $5 (one beer). Do not worry though: I will keep Aedict 2.9 available forever.

This dictionary is not practical for everyday use in Japan. For example: I search the common word eat, and 食べる shows way down 10th on the list. Stupid. Plus this dictionary uses free public domain word databases, which are incomplete and unreliable. They are missing many basic definitions such as the word 'windy'. We need a customized and COMPLETE word definition database. Also, there's no common word search filter, no kanji search, and no bookmarking. Don't waste your time.

This dictionary is no longer in active development and seems quite dated. There actually is a newer version of it called AEDICT 3 by the same developer.

I have used Jim Breen's online Japanese dictionary for well over a decade so finding this app for my phone was a godsend. Until I purchased the newer version, I used this app EVERY DAY to look up everything from song lyrics to unknown kanji in a friend's G+ post as well as doing a daily notepad quiz! The newer app is even better than this one but I still highly recommend this basic version.
