Thế kỷ XX vừa mới trôi qua, cũng là thời điểm hoàn tất quyển “Tiểu sử Danh Tăng Việt Nam thế kỷ XX tập II”. Tuy nhiên ban biên tập vẫn chưa thể kết thúc công việc ở giai đoạn này, còn lại rất nhiều danh Tăng mà chúng tôi chưa sưu tầm được, hoặc có tư liệu nhưng chưa đầy đủ.

Ở quyển Tiểu sử Danh Tăng tập II này, chúng tôi vẫn trung thành với phương pháp khảo cứu và bố cục như tập đầu ra mắt cách đây bốn năm. Qua ý kiến đóng góp của chư tôn đức, các nhà nghiên cứu và độc giả khắp nơi, trong quyển II này chúng tôi có thêm phần mục lục về sinh quán và trú quán của chư danh Tăng, để tiện việc tra cứu theo từng địa phương và để nơi sản sinh ra những danh Tăng làm tư liệu truyền thống.

Như đã nói trên, chúng tôi vẫn theo hệ thống bố cục công trình của quyển I, cho nên tập II giới thiệu các vị danh Tăng vẫn giữ 4 phần biên tập đã có. Ngoài ra chúng tôi đưa thêm chuyên mục thứ 5: “Danh Tăng Giai Thoại” để ghi lại những truyền thuyết, hành trạng thánh hóa của chư Tổ sư được lưu truyền trong các chùa và dân gian, mà theo phương pháp khoa học lịch sử, chúng tôi không thể đưa vào phần chính sử.

Quyển Tiểu sử Danh Tăng tập II ghi lại thân thế và công đức thêm 100 vị danh Tăng tiêu biểu từ đầu thế kỷ XX cho đến năm 2000, năm bản lề trước thế kỷ XXI. Đặc điểm của quyển này là việc biên khảo khá đầy đủ về chư vị Thánh tử đạo ở giai đoạn pháp nạn đấu tranh của Phật giáo trong thập niên 60 – 70, và thêm một số vị danh Tăng có công hoằng dương đạo pháp ở hải ngoại. Ngoài ra phần phụ lục vẫn là các vị cư sĩ tiêu biểu có công góp phần hiển dương đạo pháp, để lại dấu ấn lịch sử của thế kỷ.

Hy vọng rằng quyển “Tiểu sử Danh Tăng Việt Nam tập II” này sẽ ít nhiều giúp quí độc giả hình dung được toàn cảnh mạch sống của Phật giáo Việt Nam thế kỷ XX qua những tấm gương tiêu biểu để chúng ta vững vàng tiếp bước đưa Phật giáo Việt Nam đi vào thế kỷ XXI.
