About Device Analyzer

Device Analyzer collects usage statistics in the background while you use your phone. Personally identifying information is removed whenever possible while preserving useful information. Periodically the recorded data is uploaded to our server at the University of Cambridge, where we will aggregate it with other people's data and draw inferences from the patterns that emerge.

What's in for me?

- Personal analytics - extracting data from the things we do every day, e.g. phone calls or our movement patterns - is becoming increasingly popular. We provide you with new ways to look at what is happening inside your mobile phone. The website allows you to download all the raw data we collect from your phone.

- See your 3G data traffic and wifi traffic, phone minutes and texts sent.

Why do we collect your data?

Perhaps surprisingly, we know relatively little about how individuals use smart phones. Which of the many features do you use? And how often? Do you often miss calls? How many text messages do you send? Mobile phone carriers know your calling patterns but often don't make them available to manufacturers. They in turn conduct interviews and surveys to see what people like about their phones and what they use them for, but these are always limited to a relatively small group of people.

Device Analyzer performs rigorous, automatic collection. It doesn't get tired after a week of recording what you have done and can provide a large and detailed data set covering a broad audience. We will use this data set to make recommendations for the improvement of future smart phones, extract patterns and trends. Our aim is to provide new insights and recommendations based on what people do.

With your permission, we would like to share your data set with other academic and industrial researchers worldwide so that they can get even more from it. If you don't want this to happen please let us know with a single click in the app and your data will only be used within the University of Cambridge.

What is collected?

Here is an overview of the types of data we collect:
- when you turn on your phone or charge it
- when you make phone calls and send texts
- which apps you use
- wifi and bluetooth devices near your phone
- your coarse (network-based location)

After running this app this for years, on 5 plus devices. I'm going to stop using it. It offers little value, No suggestions like Carat. Only good thing is its call and data usage counters which can help you in choosing data or call plans.

Works fine. It hasn't been updated for some time but can't say that is an issue really.

This is a lovely interface to help us understand how we use our phones, and contribute to a scientific cause at the same time.

I just want to see more graphs and charts. Improve the context.

D70%

Not compatible with Marsmallow: experiencing random device reboots. Also, within the settings I can see the gathered data never gets uploaded (even when I try to force it.)

Although I understand that to log the device state the app needs to use the CPU and this consumes battery, this app represents 5% of my battery consumption. I really do not know exactly why this app requiere such amounts of energye, but I think that the gathered data is not representative because it is affected by the software. Having some Android development experience, I believe that the this app should sacrifice amount of data gathered to increase data accuracy, i.e, gather less data for the sake of consuming less battery.

S70%
by S####:

I love this app. It has no noticeable effect on my battery account, provides useful information and seems to be a genuinely useful thing for the research community to have access to.

L70%
by L####:

Nice app but it's started pausing randomly and I can't keep track of my data usage accurately anymore.

M70%
by M####:

Like what you guys are doing, but it's sitting with 4096k data, eating half my battery in 4 hours... :(

N70%
by N####:

Upload still not working, 914k data points just sitting there..

N70%
by N####:

Sitting on 1013k points. Useless if it doesn't work.

I had to uninstall this as it was using over 15mb of memory after about 2 weeks. I reinstalled to see what it starts of as; when first installed it uses only 500k. Great app apart from that. I will increase no of stars when memory problem is rectified. HTC Desire in UK

N70%

Uploading is super fast again. No more 2 hours for 195k yo be uploaded. Lol

N70%

N70%
by N####:

Great idea, happy to contribute, but you guys need to fix the uploading problem. Even over wifi it fails every time. --edit uploading works again!

T70%
by T####:

Not able to upload data since days and app taking up more storage space. Uninstalled.

Y70%
by Y####:

Five stars for the idea, two for the execution, at least w/ tegra 2 devices. Created multiple force closes on several apps and a couple battery pulls.

N70%
by N####:

The upload and log in problems were due to server upgrades, but as of 16:20 CET today is now working again. Uses a lot of memory when it is not able to upload data, should be able to move to SD or at least store the data on SD.

N70%
by N####:

Works great except it doesn't detect text messages sent or received through the Google Voice app. It also isn't detecting cell data on Sprint Nexus 4G

R70%

This Fak...! appl. drained my fully charged battery during night by sucking-up probably the whole phone including a 10 gig. Sd card. A bizarre way of collecting info on behalf of Cambridge university!!! What a joke!!!

Uses too much batery

E70%

If you are a statistics freak you'll love it! BUT it hardly lets the device enter Deep Sleep state.

P70%
by P####:

Keeps the device awake for long enough to have a measurable impact on battery life. When the screen is off you shouldn't ask frequently for network location etc.

E70%
by E####:

I really like this app and the fact that it is for a good cause (research is always good) but now it force closes when opening settings after the update.
