About Plain.txt: Dropbox Notes

Take notes quickly and easily, organise them in folders, sync them with all your devices using Dropbox.

Plain.txt aims to be gloriously simple, by doing just one thing, and doing that one thing very well: taking plain text notes.

Plain.txt uses Dropbox to sync and store your notes, so you're not tied into someone else's platform. You're free to take your notes elsewhere whenever you want, and open them with whatever app you choose to on the desktop.

Last update was early 2015, and there's been no response to an email about a critical error that was sent two weeks ago. It doesn't sync the notes to Dropbox if you leave the title to the default of current date and time, and who knows what other weird bugs like this exist hidden. Might be useful as a simple mobile note taking app, but don't rely on it for anything else.

Very good and super reliable. Basically the best in the store to save your notes to Dropbox and sync them safely without randomly deleting all your notes! Only thing I wish it could add so I can give it five stars is to monitor if the txt files on Dropbox itself are modified and to sync them to the phone before opening and editing an old file and creating a conflict file.

Getting text -- plain text -- into Dropbox can be a pain. This app does just what it says it's going to do and it works flawlessly. It meets a need I've had for years that no other app has been able to do without way too much effort. Well done.

Works very well, is simple and fast. There is a complicated balance between keeping it simple and elegant, and functionality, and this App is very close to it. There are things I'd love to have, but if you want a simple way to access your notes, and like the idea of also having them as good old txt files on your computer, this does the job just right. Also, it's free and ad-free! I'd happily pay for this. Some more features I'd love to have: * A dark theme * Font options (at least a monospace option!) * Custom default filename * Markdown highlights

But have same problem other people encountered, like conflicted copy. The developer seems to not update it for a long time.

C70%
by C####:

Phenomenal concept, feels immature. It needs features like search, various settings including /where/ your data is stored, and font options. Pending those changes, the app is a great proof of concept for hassle free note taking, and access to said notes. I'm sure I'll use it regularly one day.

Good app but didn't keep what I typed a few times. I typed a few large paragraphs only to come back to the app to find everything gone. quite devastating,

Says empty folder. Dropbox is not empty!!!

Still testing. Love the following >Ability to add text files directly from drop box on desktop. >Folder view. Request >Increase or decrease font size [not formatting] >Fixed size font support . >Pin a text file to home screen. >Would love a search feature. This can be a great note app Regards

Great and simple, a very well designed, practical app. Desperately needs an undo though, incase you delete a file!

Excellent, Minimal Design, Intuitive Noter. I no longer use as there has been no support or updates since last year 2015

As a writer, l needed something this simple & useful . It's the perfect companion for a constant note-taker Galaxy Note 4

Great interface, could have been better with an option for giving the app full access to Dropbox rather than just the app dir.

Please add some searching feature and enable reorganization of notes (moving of folders and files), thank you.

Simple yet very useful. One request: can you make a sync button and a notification that the note is already on dropbox. Thanks.

LG G3. Overall my favourite note app. So simple and pretty good integration with dropbox. My primary problem is that when I edit a note on my windows pc, it creates a conflicted copy in dropbox. If I edit in the android app, no problem. An annoyance, but I still love the simplicity of the app. And to repeat what others said, if you accept the default naming convention of date/time, it will not show up in windows explorer dropbox folder, even though it shows on the dropbox website.

Y70%
by Y####:

The default file name format (yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM) is incompatible with windows, meaning dropbox will refuse to sync. Thus, to 90 percent of the users, the default name won't work (and unless you debug your dropbox account, you won't know why). It'll get 5 stars when it has a better, preferably user-customizable default file name. Update: I've been using the app for a few weeks and I've come to really, really enjoy it. Dropbox sync works well and the app is pleasant to use. Wish/suggestion: It would be great if this app could be used in "script mode" to append a piece of text to a file and then sync the file. I.e. as a tasker task, which would invoke plain.txt in script mode and ask it to write a log entry to a file which is then synced. Update2: Dropbox sync doesn't work well for files that are occasionally modified elsewhere. I get huge number of conflicting versions. The app should invoke synchronization it self to get latest versions, or it should be possible to force an update, e.g. by dragging down on the file list (the standard update gesture).

Clean, enjoyable interface that does exactly what is advertised: edits text files and syncs to Dropbox. You can safely edit offline as well. Sure there are a lot of features that would be nice (markdown, history, dark theme for night) but there isn't much to break when it's this simple.

Lovely App. Simple clean clear and very light weight. Besides, it saves the notes automatically. You don't have to tell the device to save it, because obviously if you are writing the stuff, you are going to save it. Smart.

Y70%

If only it didn't keep adding .txt to the filename. Not every text file ends that way.

I have been unable to figure out how I can create new notes and edit existing notes on my Mac. Although it says "compatible with all devices", does that mean all non-Mac devices? I think I'd really like this, but I need the create and edit access from my Mac (I do have read access). Also, can't find any help or forum regarding the app. Would love to hear from anyone who knows how to do this.

While the core of this app is OK, it often generates conflicted copies of files, and I find it confusing; it's hard to know whether a note is saved, or what returning to the menu does.

and also add this app in to shear menu for text

After trying a few apps, this one is AWESOME! After update: one of the few apps that actually UPGRADES the lay out, especially the color. No eyecatching=eyeblinding colorchange. Very nice soft color. Thank you and respect.

Great and simple. Love the auto save and reliable synchronization to Dropbox

It's just work, very pleased. It's the app I looking for. Could you make it work with Box Sync also? Would be great if there's a option to disable background service (which needed if you also sync back from dropbox, I just don't). Disable using Greenify anyway.

F70%

This app is almost exactly what I want, but with one MAJOR flaw. When I create new notes, they are sorted alphabetically or by numerical order, with numbers at the top in numerical order, followed by letters in alphabetical order. Why this would be the unchangeable default is absolutely beyond me. It would seem logical to have the most recent notes at the top, because they are most likely to be needed. Please please change this, or at least make different sorting options, as I like everything else about this app, and would love to give it 5 stars. George

Great app, although I'd really like to be able to select my own folder on Dropbox. I already have a folder full of text notes that I use on other platforms. I don't want to migrate or move it just so I can access them on Plain.txt. Unfortunately, without this one feature I can't really use Plain.txt

Y70%

Will not open pre-existing files created by other programs including the ios version if plaintext. Fine for short notes, but I need something better.

Simple, efficient, fast, clean. Works great and just makes sense. If you want straight forward cloud based text / note editing - this is it. Cudos to the developer for keeping it simple and reliable..

But app itself is way too basic. It's not possible to access previously created notes(maybe it's dropbox limitation though) and not possible to disable auto-save, so wrongly edited notes are lost

Y70%

Simple functional note application using the basic txt format syncing with Dropbox! This app has it all and is so simple to use that it has no current competition. Deducting one star for missing search. Add it please!
