It's not obvious how you can just purchase single issues without a subscription, which you can do in the iOS version.

J70%
by J####:

Better as a result of the update, but it still lacks the feature would make it really great - the ability (as there is on the website) to search the entire archive for a writer or topic. As it is, it requires endless scrolling back through issues represented by their front covers and their volume number (no dates!). Even a drop-down list allowing selection of a particular month and year would help.

H70%
by H####:

Nice clean app overall, would be better if the navigation didn't obscure the headline when scrolling to the top of the article. However, being able to download issues on demand and the improved layout and fonts makes it a superior experience to the mobile site. A great way to consume your issues of the LRB.

by D####:

The new LRB app is nice enough in its own right - good looking, elegant and uncluttered interface, lovely typesetting - but aside from the ability to download issues, it is ultimately inferior to the website. Any web browser will allow you to search for text within an article, and multitask with other apps without losing your context (position in page). The LRB website also offers archive search. It's annoying, because none of the glossy design features here mandate an app per se - aside from the ability to download issues, this experience could've been achieved on the site.

I may have missed something but I can't see the point of this app. I have now uninstalled it and saved the website so I can search articles. I can't do that on the app. I can't do anything on the app.

Clunky and freezes my Sony Z3.

Happy to return to a positive review after a world of trouble with this app during 2016. There's nothing fancy here, just a plain-text rendition of the LRB: you scroll down, you scroll up, you turn the page. It's solid - you're never in danger of accidentally touching the screen in a strange way and finding yourself somewhere you didn't want to be. The typeface is clear and the app doesn't burn a hole in your RAM like *some* lit-mag apps do. Good work.

J70%
by J####:

Won't download latest issue, you have to uninstall and then reinstall the app. Won't remember where you were when reading, you have to select both the issue and article again, then find your place. An indictment of the LRB.

Q70%
by Q####:

Horrible app. It suddenly decided that my login and password information are in error and denied me access. I reset the account, deleted it, reinstalled it but to no avail. I have no trouble getting into my account on my computer.

D70%
by D####:

Occasionally I get lucky and I can read the LRB. The rest of the time it freezes on the splash screen.

F70%
by F####:

Love the LRB. My only bugbear with this app is that it allows you to download issues for offline reading, but requires an internet connection to launch (which isn't great if it crashes whilst you're one hour into a plane journey).

T70%
by T####:

Just updated it, and now it repeatedly crashes without opening. Why bother?

I70%
by I####:

Written by the same lazy developers that did the Harper's app, if not the same 'wrapper' app plugging into a different API. Not even a tenth as good as a free app like Instapaper. Looking at the site with a browser is a better user experience. Not only does it not save where you are in the reading, it can't even bring you back if you accidentally rotate the screen. No font control or dark mode. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Worst app I've used

This latest update works well.

I have to uninstall, delete token, and reinstall to get every new issue. This app used to be so handy. Tech support are very charming and nice but these constant issues are negating from the convenience of the app. I end up sending a lot of articles to my kindle so I can read them on the go.

P70%
by P####:

No need to repeat previous reviewers, suffice to say something has gone wrong with the latest release. Limited functionality like viewing settings is poor enough, but not loading the latest issue defeats the purpose. I'm hope LRB is onto it.

G70%
by G####:

It used to open, at which point it was fine. Even then i couldn't open it without an Internet connection, which made it a bit pointless. Edit 2016: a bit petty to annotate an already bad review but the new version is worse still. Loses your place if the screen is turned off or orientation changes, the contents page links to the wrong articles, and new issues don't arrive without reinstalling the app. Could hardly be worse actually. Still doesn't open offline.

T70%
by T####:

Good content, broken app. New issues don't show up in the app, even though it notifies me they are available. I have to uninstall and reinstall, then re-enter my credentials and re-download the content every two weeks when there's a new issue. Going to uninstall and just use the website.

T70%
by T####:

Love the LRB but the latest version of the mag doesn't appear automatically on the app, which is annoying. Been reduced to reinstalling the app for the third time just to access the latest edition of the mag so I can read it when I don't have internet access. I've complained about this and been told it's fixed. However, it's still not working, and that is timewasting and annoying!

B70%
by B####:

Having read all the reviews saying how useless this is I installed it with some trepidation, downloaded the latest issue, then the previous one. Both worked fine. Downloaded one from 2014. No problem. They must have fixed it and it is very nice and easy to use. Well done.

I get the app notification that a new issue is available, but it isn't there until I re install the app! The app crashes each time I reopen it also.

B70%
by B####:

Won't load new editions, have to reinstall each time. And the offline access is patchy at best.

T70%
by T####:

While the older version of this app was dull but functional, this version doesn't work at all. The real, paper version is of course as good as ever.

T70%
by T####:

On top of that, doesn't open when offline, even if issues are in the local memory. Please give us the old version back.

T70%
by T####:

I had problems getting the latest issues but seemed ok after reinstalling. Now 3 weeks on it seems that only worked to get that issue, now having to uninstall and reinstall each time there is a new issue.

T70%

2nd of june issue is missing its cover and app crashes when trying to read it. older issues still work...

T70%
by T####:

Stopped working. Won't download new issues.

T70%
by T####:

A functional app but would like a bookmarking feature so that I would be able to return to where I'd left off in an article. Also found the navigation not obvious but I think I just need to use the app more.

T70%
by T####:

Cannot log into the app, what's wrong? I can log in when accessing through the browser. It was OK like month ago.

T70%
by T####:

Broken, unable to read latest since update. Please fix.

H70%

I mean, really? Basic failure to test functionality. I hope the LRB didn't pay the developers for this.

Loads fine, no problem . But doesn't always let me download latest edition of LRB . Tells me to subscribe and offers no alternative. A ccording to support I need to uninstall and reinstall app. which works for them but not me. So it must be Note 4 as no one else has problem

P70%

Crashes, lost data, least reliable app I use. LRB offer no help or support - renders a subscription completely pointless.

X70%
by X####:

Ok app in general, but missing some standard Android reading features. First, a scroll bar to indicate reading progress so you know where you are in an article. Second, ability to adjust font size. The current size OK for most, but not for older eyes. I also like to dramatically increase fonts for those commute trips where the bus/train tends to bounce about. A search function would be helpful also, as well as bookmarking or saving articles to a "favorite" or "read later" folder.
