About Quality of Working Life

This application for devices using Android operating systems allows individuals to assess their experience at work by completing the Work-Related Quality of Life scale. Information provided is treated in strict confidence. The application is based on research at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, and provides detailed assessment results with extensive supportive materials.

The Work-Related Quality of Life (WRQoL) scale was originally developed from analysis of a survey of 1000 UK health care workers as a broad based measure of quality of working life (Van Laar et al., 2007). Thereafter, the WRQoL scale has been translated into various languages and used to investigate quality of working life in many types of occupation in more than 50 countries. The WRQoL scale has been shown to be a psychometrically strong scale based on 6 sub factors, with good reliability and validity (Easton and Van Laar, 2013).

The app takes just a couple of minutes to complete and helps the user compare their experience of work with that of other people on six subscales which measure stress, job satisfaction, working conditions, home–work balance, general wellbeing and control at work.

The app also allows the individual to track their WRQoL sub-factor scores over time.

The application can be used by individuals, or in coaching, counselling, careers advice, or annual appraisal settings, for example.

The information contained in this app and on the accompanying website qowl.co.uk is not designed to provide a diagnosis, or formal evaluation of QoWL on its own. A more complete assessment of QoWL will require further exploration and interpretation of these test results in the light of a more comprehensive evaluation of your experience and situation.

Users are advised that the information should not be considered complete in and of itself, nor should it be relied on to suggest a course of action for a particular individual. It should not be used in place of a consultation or the advice of an appropriate specialist consultant. Information contained in this app and on the accompanying website is not exhaustive and does not cover all factors which may affect an individual’s QoWL. Users are advised that it may be appropriate to consult with an appropriate specialist consultant before embarking on a new action or change.

In no event shall the authors of the WRQoL, the app, the website and any related materials, the University of Portsmouth, or any employee of that organisation or any third parties be liable for any damages including, without limitation, incidental and consequential damages, personal injury or wrongful death, libel, slander, defamation, privacy violations, lost profits, unfair competition, or damages resulting from the use of or the content itself.
