About Memolicious Thai

Learn the consonants when starting and ending a word using several phonetic representations, as well as their High/Mid/Low classification. Learn long and short vowels, and the Thai numbers 0-9. You can choose from several different Thai fonts and the app will keep track of your best/weakest questions so you have the ability to focus on the letters that you're having the most problems with. Memolicious does not yet contain any audio samples for pronunciation, although it is definitely on our TODO-list.

Memolicious is a learning system, in game form, using spaced repetition algorithms similar to those found in programs like Supermemo and Mnemosyne. If you want something that you can just jump right into, that's fun, that you'll get hooked on, and that will give the most results in the least amount of time, this is the app for you.

Background: We had started teaching ourselves the Thai alphabet and tonation rules, and were looking for a good program or app to help us. However, what we found were that the easiest apps were either simple flash card apps and glossary programs with little or no logic built in, that the game oriented apps were largely marketed to kids, with balloons and fuzzy animals. We also found that the programs that used intelligent algorithms to focus on teaching you the stuff you were having the most trouble with, were massively complex systems with steep learning curves where you had to spend hours building your learning material before even beginning to study.

Very well executed and an easy and effective way to learn. Only thing that would make this even better would be spoken letters! Thank you so much!

U70%

Very simple to use and set up.. Easy to understand ... Great music .. Choosing different fonts is very helpful since some of the Thai letters look VERY different depending on the fonts.

I like the app. Helps me learn the consonants and vowels. However I think there needs to be a way to test knowledge of consonant classes. The one lesson that does does not work as any class you choose for a class indicates a wrong answer. It would be a 5 star for me if this was working.

Y70%
by Y####:

It's great for learning consonants, but it could use audio examples for the vowels as it's difficult to transliterate them into Latin alphabet in a way that everyone can understand. For instance, the Latin alphabet versions of some of the vowels differ quite a bit from how they're written in some of the popular textbooks, but then the transliterations vary from textbook to textbook also. There's no real consensus it seems, which is why audio (by a native speaker) is vital when learning Thai, especially the vowels.

Really enjoy this app. It's well thought out. I find it elegant. Of you want to learn the Thai alphabet this is great flashcard style software only better.

X70%

You can't hear the sound the letter makes... What good is that?

X70%

Fantastic for learning the Thai alphabet. ... great app.. simple and effective.

Great way to learn thai and remember it.

As far as the design of bringing up the menu, this app fails. But it's a great app otherwise. When you DO bring up the menu (long press on the double window for Samsung phones), there's a lot to edit. I like the format and method of this app but needs some redesign.

D70%
by D####:

I'm learning a lot from this app but I can't bring up the menu. On s7 holding the back button brings up the menu but only the first time you use the app. So if you want to switch between discovery and game mode you have to either wipe the data or reinstall the app. Guessing the developers have given up as there hasn't been an update since Feb 2015! If they do an update adding the sound of the characters would be really helpful.

D70%
by D####:

But why on earth include obsolete thai consonants, that just makes it unnecessarily confusing. Also, Arabic numbers have been in use in Thailand for about the last 40 years, who needs to learn the thai ones?

Z70%
by Z####:

This has been helping me learn the characters really well, just can't access the menu to change settings. I can't unlock anything because I'm in practice mode.

U70%
by U####:

Really fast paced and potentially frustrating. If you manage to stick with it for a while you'll make progress surprisingly quickly!

U70%
by U####:

Easy to memorize the alphabet, consonant classes, end consonant...nice little music during the learning who seems just a game. If you add the sound it must be for the vowels because that the least strong point of the app. Thanks, very good job you did! Update : My friend (Thai) learn reading English, she use it in the opposite direction. Can be great to have a Thai-English application too. Thanks

I wish I had not updated the app! Now I can only use some features. Amost everything has a lock on it. Can only use it to learn a few things.

I first got this app years ago when it was starting out and have loved it ever since. Fun, addictive and very effective. Developers were great and fixed some niggly bugs very quickly. Getting 5 stars in game mode is hard but rewarding!

S70%

It would be among the best app to learn thai if you could hear the sound of the displayed letter.

Including different fonts is a very nice touch. I had difficulty locating the preferences menu at first so it might be a good idea to include those directions in the start up paragraph. Overall it's a useful tool in learning written thai

Like the update so far. Adding tones to the challenge would have been nice. But still my my fave thai alphabet app.

I'm really not sure if I am learning from this memory game, but it is definitely fun. One thing that I would like to see is some kind of chart of scores over time. Right now if you get a new high score there is a screen that tells you so and shows the previous high score. I'd like to see these scores over time to give me a better sense of how I'm doing. It is a fun way to practice the Thai consonants, vowels, and numbers.

Fantastic app for learning thai script. A little knowledge is reqiured and the games give it a fun element

N70%

This is an excellent app for training your memory of the thai letters and sounds. The only thing that keeps me from giving five stars is that I would like to see the actual thai name for the letters in there somewhere.

Great! But, after using it for a while, I notice that after the audio reinforcement, the next character times out too quickly. Otherwise, great.

Z70%

This is a good start for an excellent program to learn thai script, would love to have the character pronounced for correct answer in male an female voice. Each English letter can have many thai character, would be great to hear the differences. Please update this app. :)

Great way to learn quickly since it is engaging and makes you feel in flow while playing. Im playing on asus transformer. I have experienced that it feels like the app is lagging a bit while in godlike mode. And sometimes the session ends with the same consonant being repeated 5-7 times. Only happens right before the end so probably a algorithm problem. Else it is close to perfect.

N70%
by N####:

As the devs say, this app is AWESOME! I found the mnemonic method perfect when I was learning the Japanese alphabets and this has been great for learning the Thai script. A couple of problems is that it currently forces portrait view on tablets, and it doesn't always clearly show the correct answer after you've selected the wrong ones (they all whizz off the screen too fast). Otherwise, this app is exactly what I was looking for in order to learn the Thai script and I would highly recommend it to everyone wanting to learn Thai!

B70%
by B####:

This app is a great way to drill in the Thai alphabet, although there are some minor problems and the algorithm could be tweaked, e.g. by trying "trick" you by offering previous incorrect answers as options. Can't wait to see the other sections implemented. Good stuff!

N70%
by N####:

I find this app very useful for my level (I can speak, read, and write Thai but am still learning). Its a great way to keep the consonant classes and letters in your memory. Great potential although at the moment some sections are greyed out so I guess they will be added in a future release. To the developer: You might wanna include the following: A section to practice the tones: Show a consonant/vowel combination and then ask what the tone is. This would make this app really, really useful. Otherwise a great start.

N70%
by N####:

This is a nice format for 1) Those wishing to learn to read Thai characters (by using the initial & final consonant games), and 2) Those wanting to be able to determine the correct tone of a word when reading it (by using the consonant class game). There's room for expansion into vowels & numbers, but this is a great start. Also, one minor request...please give us the option of turning off the music. It's nice & relaxing for the first few minutes, but after that, it detracts from the learning session.

N70%
by N####:

Awesome. I love using mnemonics and any other tool for learning a language, and this is absolutely the best way I've found to learn Thai script.

N70%

Nothing to complain, just would like to have an option to disable the music. Sometimes I'm running another audio producing app in the background.

Y70%

Very simple to use and set up.. Easy to understand ... Great music .. Choosing different fonts is very helpful since some of the Thai letters look VERY different depending on the fonts.
