About Out There Chronicles - Ep. 1

Out There Chronicles is an interactive graphic novel based on the science fiction universe of Out There, the acclaimed, multi-award-winning space exploration game.

After a slumber of a million years, you wake up on America, a planet colonized by humans who fled the Earth. In your quest to find your people, you’ll set off on a galactic adventure where you’ll meet a host of colorful characters and visit unimaginable locations.

Out There Chronicles is a unique adventure set several million years before Out There. Where do the Arks come from? What are the Cubes? Fans of the original game will find answers to some questions, but others will remain a mystery.
You’ll also meet various alien races and get the opportunity to learn more about their people… If you can master their language, of course.

In this universe that is so far from your own in distance and in time, a sharp mind and an instinct for survival are your only weapons. Friendships can be forged and ancient rivalries re-emerge through your encounters with almost-human and less-human races. Will you be able to distinguish friend from foe?
As in the original game, a single human is unable to face the forces of the universe alone. Achieve your goals by exercising diplomacy when needed, and seizing opportunities when they present themselves.

Written by FibreTigre, author of the original game, Out There Chronicles offers an epic story that will delight science fiction fans in search of new experiences.
Brilliantly illustrated by top French SF artist, Benjamin Carré, and equipped with a simple interface, Out There Chronicles will take you on a journey of adventure, even if you’ve never played a video game before.

Not an RPG!! This is a visual novel that is linear with no other paths. Graphics are non-existent, a slideshow of pictures. Control consists of randomly pressing dialog choices until you get on the right dialog path. Story is interesting but has numerous grammatical errors and big mistakes like them not being able to make guns because "no lead" on the moon... Seriously? Game designer has an odd choice of making a war criminal the main character and being anti America. Game time is roughly 2 hours (with trial and error), no replayability. Compared to OT omicron edition, this is very disappointing. 2/5*.

Pretty compelling story. On my playthrough, I made every effort to keep people alive, which seemed to pay off. I'm not sure what would happen if I decided to kill people instead. Is Nyx's presence necessary for survival? Also, I promised Subtle I'd never lie to him and I kept that promise, but I'm curious how he'd take if I did lie at the end.

C70%
by C####:

Very disappointed with the game. It's extremely linear and there are no challenges at all. The few decision points the game offers are so obvious I only died 4 or 5 times before ending the whole thing. The story is not that great, too, though there are some interesting analogies with reality. A shame, really.

I enjoyed the original Out There, which was set in a randomly-generated, sprawling sci-fi universe. But I love this new direction even more, as well as the characters that drive the story. This game trades in the arbitrary chance mechanic for a focused, gritty storyline that brilliantly expands on the Out There universe. While the theme of improbability of survival is important, it's just not as fun or as effective as a great story. I think Mi-clos went in the right direction, and did a stellar job at it.

An interactive book! The story is great, much deeper than I thought it would be after playing it for an hour! If you have player Out There before, you can see some common background story, which makes it even more fun!

Nothing like original Out There. A boring sequence of dialogs with pictures. You die if you don't answer correctly and start from few lines ago.

Y70%
by Y####:

It's an engaging story but a little repetitive when you make the wrong choice and die, and there's no option to save your exact point, so it usually goes back a chapter before and you have to go through your choices again. When the captain got no response from the Redemption, the story just kinda hung and refused to advance. *Update* after a few more attempts, it started to work again.

E70%
by E####:

The story is fantastic but the implication that it's branching is an illusion which leads to frustration- either it's dangerous and too unclear you're picking a dead end path, or safe but you waste time exhausting options until you hit the right one. Are there any actual impactful variables?

S70%
by S####:

There arent too many CYOA games out there with this much polish. There is clearly a high degree of world building going on, though you dont get to explore too much of this in the first chapter.

by S####:

The story quality and timed sequences remind me Gods will be Watching, another great "soldier survival" game. Though there's no backstory how Darius always "returns to checkpoint", it also feels similar to GWBW. And it's interesting to finally get to know better races and Universe from original Out There. Please make Steam version and allowing rewinds at any point after finishing story for achievement hunting. Eagerly waiting for next episode. Also i have several screenshots with minor bugs and can try to help more with this magnificent game.

I bought the F'n game...PLEASE stop the popups on the original! Nothing like OT other than some storyline commonality. Meh.

S70%
by S####:

Good game that could be great, unfortunately there is no replay value at all, due to the game being completely linear and able to be finished in under an hour. It gives the illusion that your decisions matter but unfortunately it's really die or not, there are not multiple paths to take etc.

Not interested in social commentary and religious mockery disguised as game play. Develop a real plot instead of mocking faith. Uninstalled. If i could still refund, i would.

I loved the original Out There and Chronicles is even better. There's something profoundly alien and beautiful about the Out There universe.

I can't exactly point out a reason, but this somehow reminds me of Farscape which is nothing but a good thing and the overall narration is just beyond good.

Just finished it and I really liked it! Love the style of the game and it's easy to play. The only negatives must be that it's fairly short, and the checkpoints are a little too far back when I die. I'll definitely get part 2 though, so keep up the good work!
