About A Study in Steampunk

Steam-powered mechs meet forbidden sorcery! Inspired by Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, and Jack the Ripper, "A Study in Steampunk: Choice by Gaslight" is an epic 277,000-word interactive mystery novel by Heather Albano, co-author of "Choice of Broadsides," "Choice of Zombies," and "Choice of Romance: Affairs of the Court." Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

The game is afoot! In a world of gaslit streets, mysteriously long-lived foreign nobles, and master criminals, will you defend your Empire from spies or overthrow it from within? Advocate science and reason or learn forbidden magic? Romance men, women, both, or neither? End as a healer, a freedom fighter, a vigilante, or a traitor?

The fate of the Empire is in your hands!

Engaging story all the way! There are so many ways for it to go, and the game has a lot for you as a player to explore and enjoy. I recommend this game to those who wish for drama, a great deal of tension and choices that feel like they matter. It isn't too long, and it tells its story well with its length and medium. Give it a shot. You won't be disappointed! Warning: Story may involve some sad feels.

Great story. I usually don't like when you can't pick your own gender, but playing an innovative Watson role made up for it. I almost never review games, but this was great. I've read the sherlock cannon, and it was true in spirit with a unique twist. I look forward to reading it again and picking other options

I've just finished my first playthrough of this story and thoroughly enjoyed. So much so that I immediately restarted it. It is a long title compared to most hosted games but that is definitely not a bad thing. At no point did the story drag or the choices feel unimportant. In fact some were so poignant and difficult to make that I actually found myself having dilemmas, which is rare for me. All in all this is a great title that I'm glad I tried.

With a little bit of Star Wars light and dark sides thrown into this settings religion and It all blends perfectly. This is a great story with a near perfect length. Believable romances with great plot and character development. I loved it 6*

Bloodydamn! Worth every penny, buy it as soon as you can! The only gripe I'd have is not enough choice in some aspects, but the author is only human. Best Choice of Games yet. Sequel, stat!

A lengthy novel with great replay value. I felt as if my choices and skillset really mattered. I can't wait to play it again to see different endings. The setting was fun, the story had great twists, and there were plenty of tough choices to make.

I don't review games very often, but this game was absolutely stunning. The writing flows beautifully and the characters really tug on the heartstrings. My only criticism is that the main character must be a male. I would of adored the option to play as your gender of choice. However, a quick change of name and you may trick yourself into thinking you're playing the gender of your choice. Because of this I was a little hesitant to purchase, but I'm certainty glad I did.

I just finished my first run of the game. Often I had to pause and consider my options, often two choices seemed to fit and twice I had to set my phone down and ask myself "What kinda of man is Lenard J. Murry? What does he want from this?". The story is engaging and I felt like my choices mattered. I highly recommend this game. Now excuse me, but I'm going to take another run, and maybe this time I can save more lives. Or maybe, in this life, I'll take them instead... .

A really fun game with lots of great choices and replay value. My only problem is that my achievements keep disappearing. I get nearly all of them and then it resets itself to zero.

This has absolutely and undoubtedly been the most amazing CYOA game I have ever had the pleasure of reading. 10/10. Will and do recommend to any and everyone. The story was so immersing, well written, and lengthy that I completely forgot I wasn't reading an acclaimed novella. I know how much I hesitate when trying to decide whether or not to spend money on any of Hosted or Choice Of's games because the writing quality can vary so drastically, but please purchase this! You won't regret it, and the creator deserves as much support as we can manage! A wonderful piece of work!

One of the best, if not the best, CoG game I've played! I absolutely loved it. My only issue is that there is no way to restart the game once you've started it. However, the quality of the game itself makes up for this issue.

Sympathetic, believable characters. An intriguing, interesting plot. A rich, engrossing world and lore. Consequential choices that actually matter. Though, you may not be able to pick your gender, it does not feel constricting. The game is comfortably long with well-written interludes. All three romanceable characters are wonderful in their own way. All in all, it is one of the few games of choices, I would willingly recommend (And trust me I have played a lot of them).

This is the first time I have played one if these and it was fascinating. Im usually one for novels but this felt like a really good use of the smartphone platform. The story really does twist around your decisions. I reccomend for anyone who wants something more stimulating than a casual game to do with thier phone time. I ended up using it both like a book (i.e. 20-40 minutes at a time, and also waiting for busses etc.

I'm the one who have tried to learn an English by playing choice of game, and this work taught me a lot. I love the story, all the characters and all the choices in this game. Everything seems real, even all dilemmas that make me stare at my screen for ten minutes. The language is beautiful and I love a rhythm in the story. This game is one of my favorite now and thanks again to write this great work!!

Not going to try to put some wordy review.. If you heard of this title and are here.. Just buy it. Trust me. I put this up there with Zombie Exodus, and Hero series. Probably higher than the hero series because this game gives you more room for choice and not set on getting you eventually to one point.

Such joy to read and a story where you really feel that your choices matter. It might even be the best cyoa game I have played. I felt like the story was my own, my choices felt natural and streamlined. My name was Dr. Dale Tucker and this game took me on one heck of a ride!

Sympathetic characters, believable relationships and an utterly engrossing story, all set in a completely fascinating world. It made me laugh and cry and giggle, it made my mouth drop open. In some games, the player character is a boring one-dimensional cutout; this game is the perfect opposite of that. It is so vivid and real. This is without a doubt the best story that Hosted and Choice of Games have to offer!

the universe was very well fleshed out. the romances felt believable. the decisions made had actual repercussions. all in all a game worthy of the CoG name. good job. now the bad thing is that you cant choose genders but thats probably because in this setting a female cant join the army as a required backstory. other than that, cool game

Easily the best game in the Choice Of series. Highly recommended. You play a rather interesting version of Watson, a former-military surgeon in a rather immersive world. Using your powers of investigation, you'll enter a world of steam powered monstrosities, magic, and the erstwhile Professor battling you behind the scenes. A highly imaginative bit of intrigue.

This is an amazing game that truly immerses you from start to finish. Yes there's no choice on gender but considering the time its understandable. What I liked most about the game is how church vs state, progression vs tradition, people vs government and intrigue on every level is masterfully woven into this story. Bravo to the Author and bravo to CoG for hosting them.

Just completed this game & it is now one of my new favorites! It is so very detailed & such a long game that it truly seemed to go on forever... in a good way! The choices that you make while playing the game really do make big differences within the story. Truly an excellent gaming experience!!

The story was interesting, the writing was solid, overall it was pretty engaging and there's significantly different ways things can go. Despite this, and being the longest CoG story I've seen, I can't help but feel it was incomplete. Things in later chapters feel rushed, and the story ends right where I was expecting it to really take off. So that was disappointing. But if you like CoG, I would definitely recommend it.

In general, I don't like reading. However, I couldn't help finding myself becoming lost in the interesting plot, believable characters and the realistic decisions that I had to choose from. Completely lost track of time while playing this. Amazing

I have just finished reading this book and I'm blown away by the amount of detail that was in it. The story is very long to begin with, and it's captivating from start to finish. What surprised me the most is that at the middle of the game you get to choose from three different paths, each being unique in its way. And on top of all these from time to time you get to play the detective. Playing the detective has it all in these game, from investigating to interrogating and once I even had to make a moral choice.

I was worried that the steampunk aspect would be used as an excuse, a throwaway, a setpiece meant to dolly up an otherwise uninspired story. I'm so happy that I was wrong. A tale where you play as Watson analogue set in a world more closer to real life than many fantastical steampunk stories out there. No airship battles, girls with goggles or high spirited adventure here. Instead, face chlorea epidemics, government incompetance, war and religious persecution. A must play.

I went into this expecting some pretty big things, considering the reviews and I was not disappointed. This has so much replay value I've played it three times. I sure hope another one like this hits the store soon and hopefully more by the author.

Certinly great value good read. For my personal taste was a bit too political some of the more insterting aspects were not as fully realized, I basically played for a more fantasy setting but dont feel rewarded 5th star for length and pontintiol.

Seriously, I spent hours on this story, and I'm still hungry for more. I tend to stay away from stories that don't let me play as a girl or gender neutral but I loved this despite that. The story is so emersive and the choices felt like they mattered. I would love to buy more from this author

While steampunk doesn't look nearly as glorious in text I still enjoyed the game immensely. Would have liked to choose my gender though. The game could get pretty stressful decision-wise but some people like that kind of thing. Still, this was one of the Choice Of games that left me with a satisfying ending.

I have played alot of these games. This Is by far the best and my favorite. It's huge. It has so many differences per play through and character build and you get the same key story points but from different perspectives. Great writing and story and characters and twists. Epic story.

K70%

I really love everything else about this game, but I won't give a higher rating without a female option (seriously, it's a text-based adventure-a female option is not difficult). I've seen reviews comment that the male-lock makes sense given the "backstory" of the game, but Choice of Broadsides didn't lock gender and had a similar "backstory" setting.

I wish that I could have found this 2 years ago. Nothing is as fulfilling as this story. They have heart, fellow feeling, dreams realized and unrealized, and the nature of the beast. It hurts to leave.

This is the best and the longest interactive novel ever. I don't regret spending almost all my Google money on it. The story is very well written, the characters are interesting and likeable, and the romance feels realistic. The story just keeps me up all night until 3 in the morning. Just like Zombie Exodus, I got addictive to Steampunk.

This game is pretty amazing in the characters, plot, and your choices! One of the drawbacks is it would have been nice to choose your gender, but I get why you can't. Still an awesome game can't wait for more from this author :)

This is the fourth game of its kind that I have played and by far the most satisfying. It's long enough to take several hours, enough choices to make that influence the outcome, plenty of literate writing and dialog that build a strong story. Well worth the price, I think it was $5, because the main character can create (with your choices, several significantly different storylines. Truly excellent! Similar games that I recommend are Attack of the Clockwork Army, Pendragon Rising, and Samurai of Hyuga

It was nice to see that the choices actually mattered for a change. This game was worth every penny and filled with content. As a Sherlock Holmes fan , I really enjoyed the character and story references. My compliments to the author. If more interactive fiction games were like this one, the genre wouldn't be so under rated

I'm reading it for the 7th time now and I try to get a different route every time. It's amazing how some desicions you make have such a huge i fluence on the story. And even after reading so often it never gets boring because there are so many choices and different ways. Just amazing work. And the characters are so well made it's awesome.
