About DVR

~~ NO GAME ASSETS ARE INCLUDED - THIS IS AN ENGINE PORT ONLY ~~

Due to copyright/EULA restrictions no game assets are included; they will need to be downloaded separately.

THE APP CAN DOWNLOAD & UNPACK FREEDOOM PHASES 1 AND 2 SEPARATELY FOR YOU
THE FREEDOOM WADS DO NOT CONSTITUTE PART OF THIS APPLICATION AS THIS IS AN ENGINE PORT ONLY

You will be offered the option to download freedoom (https://freedoom.github.io/) at first start-up. If you already own the full version of Doom or Doom 2, you can copy the WAD files to your phone to play.

YOU CANNOT USE THIS APP WITHOUT THE FOLLOWING:
* A control pad (buttons are re-mappable in the game)
* Cardboard or equivalent with head-straps to play in VR-mode (as you need hands to hold game-pad)

The fun stuff:

This cardboard port of the Doom engine features the following:
* Based on the PrBoom engine Android port wrapped in the Cardboard SDK
* Configurable resolution (for lower spec phones) - If you find your phone is struggling to draw at an acceptable frame-rate, you can edit the DVR.cfg file (found in the DVR folder on your phone) and reduce the resolution
* Supports WADS that are compatible with PrBoom/Boom/MBF
* Command line params using a text file - there is a text file in the DVR directory called extraparams.txt insert any command line params you may wish to use (for example: -nosound)

Known Issues:

- The Doom 2 WAD that can be found in the Doom 3: BFG edition doesn't work with this port. The original Doom 2 WAD works fine
- This port doesn't use an opengl renderer, but uses (an improved version of) the original Doom engine 100% software renderer. Because of this, it is quite CPU intensive so you may find you need to reduce the resolution a bit if you experience performance problems unless you have a high-end phone.
- The original engine code only allows you to look left and right, not up and down, I have worked around this to some extent by shifting the view up/down when you look up and down, but it isn't as natural. Unfortunately this is unavoidable without an opengl es 2.0 renderer.
- FOV: Again because of the use of the original Doom software renderer FOV cannot be changed. On some phones it will mean it is a bit like looking through a large window at the game, I am afraid this is unavoidable without an opengl es 2.0 renderer which could take me months to write.
- Only certain WADs have thumbnails, if you would like a wad to have a thumbnail added in the WAD chooser screen, then please let me know the name of the WAD and the thumbnail image and I will add it in a future release

Legal Stuff:

As the original Doom engine sourcecode is now GPL licensed, the full source for DVR is available in an archive found in the assets folder contained in the apk.

Not sure if I am missing something, but I can't seem to find a way to bind a key to just cycle through the weapons. There is just one to switch to "best" weapon, but "best" really depends on the situation you're in. Also, my gamepad binds different buttons just fine on other games/software, but with this there are multiple buttons assigned to the same key, so for example, the RB, RT, B, and left joystick button all map to "Mouse 1." Not sure if that's the controller or the app. No biggie since there aren't many controls. Other than those things, everything works great!

It can be a bit confusing trying to edit the text in the config file... But I managed to make the status bar show a bit more. Is there a way to make the screen fixed so we don't have to look around or look down to see the status bar? The quality is great. Also, it'd be great if you could port Chocolate Doom or GZDoom. I'd like to run the pk3 mod of Brutal Doom in VR. Thanks for the cool app! I'm lookin' forward to future updates! This app should totally be more like Quake VR. That app is really great

I like love this app, it really brings my favourite game to life! One thing, is there anyway you could make it so you can look around with your head and not the sticks? Thanks!

I love this game! The only thing i dont like is that it not save my settings. Every time I start the game i have to change the settings to my settings. Is this a bug? Even when i change the DVR.cfg manualy it did nothing. QVR works good! I love that to.

Like many other VR things, camera is rotated 90deg ccw, causing menus to act weird. Otherwise awesome

Works well, using a ps3 controller and sixaxis app. Stereoscopic 3D DOOM is awesome

Same as pascal, except even if I delete and uninstall everything it keeps the config to something I don't want by default...

Does not work with ps4 controller but works perfectly with mad catz ctrl. A dream come true !!!

Good port, but pause function acts strangely. When you press it, the screen goes black and you have to turn around until you find where the pause menu has appeared. Lots of fun and developer quickly fixed the upside-down glitch I mentioned in a previous review.

I'm very excited to give this a whirl, and it looks fantastic, but my game pad doesn't seem to work correctly or let me set it up. When I booted the game it just spun in circles regardless of where I turned my head or what button I press so I couldn't give it a proper experience.

Great game, everything works good. 1. Is there any way to disable emulation of vertical rotation? 2. How can I increase horizontal rotation sensitivity for gamepad? (in-game sliders don't do anything)

I would like to have the source code please, so I can tweak it. You will probably benefit from it anyway.

One of my all time favorite games, now in VR! This will download the Freedoom WADs which are new to me! You can also turn on OpenGL rendering, which makes it look so much better. Like QVR, I hope it gets a forum or bulletin board so users can share what mods work with this and how they got them working. Overall, great fun!

I absolutely loved QVR. I blundered in not knowing how to set it up properly though and wonder if maybe that is also the case here. This game does not take up the full available fov for me but instead appears in a constrained square shaped screen floating before me. This is hugely inferior to how QVR displays. I searched the menu but could find no options for changing it. I hope I'm just overlooking the option because if this is really just how it displays, I can't accept it.

Ok so next update, idk if you've ever plated brutal doom( fan made mod), but its a pk3 file not a .wad, hopefully you can figure out how to tweak that support in it,and that mod should allow up and down looking through the vr headset, great job though man keep it up, also other .wad files won't play on the game and there doom mods as well, please look into

It works pretty well, but I was wondering if Hacx support would be possible in the future? If it isn't already supported via mod loading
