About Fires Near Me

Fires near Me

This is the official Android application presenting information on bushfires for the participating fire agencies in the Australian states and territories and in New Zealand, developed by the NSW Rural Fire Service.

This application provides information on current incidents across Australia and New Zealand attended by those participating agencies. It also provides information on total fire bans.

The application gives users the ability to source information on incidents near them, using the 'Fires near Me' function.
The 'Fires near Me' application is in trial, and as such its features may vary. Support for the application is not provided due to its inherent simplicity. More information may be found http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or the web site for the fire agency in your local state or territory or in New Zealand.
Your feedback, however, is gratefully sought, and will help us develop an even more useful way of giving you information on fires near you. Please send any feedback here: mobilefeedback@rfs.nsw.gov.au .
For further information, please see http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au .

Features
Initially centres the map on your Current Position.
Allows you to choose another location, e.g. the destination for your weekend holiday, and centres on that location.
Lets you know if there is a fire within 50 km of your location.
Displays any fires within a 10 km radius of your location.
Allows you to see a list of the bush fires from participating agencies, sorted by their proximity to your location--the closest being sorted to the top of the list.
Tap on the fire and you will see some information about the fire. Tap on the arrow (">") and you will see the list of bush fires.
Top on the arrow (">") of a fire within the list of bush fires, you will see a screen of more details on that particular fire.
Tap the map button from the Details page and the map page appears centred on that fire.
If a Total Fire Ban is active for today or tomorrow for your location – and that information has been provided by the fire agency in your local state or territory or in New Zealand – the Total Fire Ban symbol appears on the screen to warn you of this.
Fires are listed by the name of the nearest town or village, if available. This makes it easier for you to recognise where it is, so that you can avoid it!
PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE. Have a Bush Fire Survival Plan and keep up to date on fires in your area.

Whats the yellow tree mean? Safe area? Unsafe area? We hav a catastrophic warning with a local fire front 18km away. Hav used this app 2 stay aware of situation. All day our fire symbol was 1of few red symbols. Thrs 100's of fires & most hav blue. 12am ours changed 2 yellow but no othr info changed. Thrs no key 2 explain the colours. Does it mean downgraded? Upgraded? Or nothing at all? Dont kno whethr 2 feel relievd or more worried! Evn so, having seen the lack of info in 1994s fires this app deserves a 5.

To the guy down the list. . The colours don't mean much. . More of an indication of threat level to people and property. Some of the blue ones are bigger and out of control in comparison to yellows etc.. just make sure you read the attached labels.. and if you're that close. Leave. Yesterdays fire up the mountains jumped 6km just due to hot ambers floating in the heated air.. same fire.. massive distance. . Containment lines failed.

Really good app works smoothly defiantly faster than trying to load up the internet map from the website but from a Firefighter here I think it needs the option to show and hide prescribed burns so if someone sees a fire they can look at this map to see if it's been reported or if it's a HR / prescribed burn off before calling the local fire comunications centre

Great idea, very useful and possibly life saving. However the UI is very dated and really unreliable when zooming in on the map. A refreshed design is definitely in order.

Once updated on the fire system (icon) in helps manage incidents as a fire fighter. Also very useful to refer public back to for information about a local fire.

The idea is great, but if there's any sort of zooming rapidly, it crashes.

Excellent for NSW and Tas. Have found it good. Only two requests 1) Does not cover other states. There is another app that does SA but for I cannot find one for Vic that supports my tablet so would appreciate the NSW guys pulling their data through as well if possible. Planning the drive down the Hume in summer often, and would like to be able to check status of all fires on the route. Same for the drive Canberra-Adelaide. 2) Will not switch to landscape on the tablet. Since I have the tablet on a stand this makes it awkward to use the app as I have to physically alter the tablet's position.

The concept of this app is excellent but the usability on a Nexus 7 is poor. The map scrolls very slowly and the app is reminiscent of an ios port. The app would benefit from having advisories associated with fires included.

When updates are posted there is no changelog included. Otherwise a great app.

I live in Queensland & from the description above expected some form of information related to my state. This was not the case, although it did show my GPS location it only shows Fire events occurring in NSW, therefore this app is of little use to me unless I travel through NSW.

Why isn't this app used across Australia? It's especially noticeable crossing into Qld which has nothing to compare with this.
