Mondly: Learn Languages in VR for Android
I can see the potential here, but you should have kept this in development a while longer. Super buggy. There's a lag in the mic, it doesn't activate until I'm halfway through the first word, at which point it doesn't recognize what I'm saying no matter how good my pronounciation is, and I can't advance. Very frustrating, all but useless in its current state.
I'm on a ZTE axon 7 using bobovr with integrated head phones for this daydream app. In order to play the vr language learning games, you must give app access to your audio recorder. The idea of the game is to have conversations with vr agents aloud in foreign languages. Each response you give is supposed to be an on-the-spot audio recording. So you need to sit in a quiet location to play the game. However, the audio record button in the vr environment hardly ever works when you're "playing", and the speech segmentation and word recognition software is pathetic (as other reviewers noted). It wouldn't even work in my native language. Simply put, I want a refund. The developers and CEO should be ashamed of themselves for releasing and making unwitting customers pay for this terrible, broken version of their app. EDIT #1: In response to the CEO Alex's reply, I edited my original review's grammar, but I did not change any of the content. EDIT #2: In response to Alex's reply to my review, I want to re-emphasize how bad this app is. Out of 12 reviewers, 6 reviewers say that the app doesn't work. I find it hard to believe Alex's response that they tested "tens" of phones.
It is a great app because it's interactive,it helps you practice your language level in a very realistic ambiance that gives you confidence in real life when you get one of the situations.
It really has so much bugs. But if you keep improving, it will be the best language learning app ever made. Amazing potential. Keep motivated and work hard ;)
Great potential - just needs a bit of support. The "Things you can say" dialogue box often appears empty, so you get no way of knowing what your options are. The microphone / voice recognition is also a bit patchy - sometimes only picks up the second half of what you say. As a demo, this is awesome, and shows the potential for a lot more. Iron out the bugs, I'd be prepared to pay a lot more for it. As it is, I'm slightly miffed.
I have just purchased this app, and cannot get it to work. I select the language, than when I try to choose the scenario... nothing happens. A red circle comes up... as if loading, but it stops there. Cannot figure out why it does that. How can I get full refund?! ???? I am very disappointed over the fact, that I cannot use this app at all. Therefore, when you say, that you are sorry I couldn`t fully (?) enjoy this app, you should have said, that it didn`t work at all. It loads, then when I am to pick the scenario, it freezes. Nothing happens. Please advice me on how to get a full refund. Thanks.
Fixed but now that it works I'm very dissapointed. This app barely has any content, can barely recognize what you say, and is to advanced for biggeners trying to learn a language. Not worth the price and barely even works.
I have taught Chinese at university for 20 years. I have also developed a 3D virtual environment for my students to practice their Chinese in (not commercially available) that we have been using for nearly 10 years. I say this because I am actually excited about MondlyVR and its potential. However, I must warn potential learners of Chinese that quite a bit of what is said in the dialogues is wrong, either grammatically or a native speaker would just never say those things or that way. Some of it is just nonsense and you get the feeling that the English was just feed into Google Translate and the literal Chinese translation spat out and used. The pronunciation of the so called native speakers is also all over the place. I hope Mondly makes the effort to fix these things up properly, otherwise they are doing s huge disfavor to their customers.
Excellent way to practice conversation in the language you want to learn. It helps you prepare for a real life encounter with a native speaker. ????
I like the idea of learning a new language in VR, but I would love to see more real life situations. Otherwise I see a lot of potential. Looking forward for the updates.
A new cool way to practice languages! Thanks!
I would love to learn a language this way, but so far it's too buggy to actually use.
Exactly what I was looking for to learn Spanish
Awesome:)
Did not work at all with Nexus 6P and cardboard. Application started but got stuck on language selection screen.

I really enjoyed this app, I'd love to see a shopping situation and maybe visit to a tourist attraction, public transport, and a wine bar. I use a pixel and find it gets very hot to the point of having to stop to cool down. I also struggled with the pointer it slips off the recording bit sometimes when the person is further away. But overall very good price for the fun
