About GoodSAM Responder

The speed at which lifesaving care can be delivered varies incredibly the world over. The UK has some of the fastest ambulance response times in the world, however in London, a first responder only arrives within 8 minutes to an immediately life threatening call 70% of the time and outside of London this is only achieved in 50% of calls. In such events this can be too late; irreparable brain and heart damage can occur within a couple of minutes.

When patients suffer a head injury they often stop breathing although their brain is actually not itself injured. Opening an airway and giving basic life support can radically alter the outcome for these patients. The problem has been finding people who can do this, alerting them and rapidly getting them to the patients.

There are, of course, thousands of people with such skills; off-duty doctors, nurses, police officers, first aiders are all "Good Samaritans" who are simply unaware of the emergency going on next door or outside their building. The Good SAM App uses the technology that can notify these people and help the person in need.

Who Are We?

Good SAM is a community of people – Good Samaritans – happy to assist if they are the closest person to a medical emergency. They are trained in first aid and may have additional skills. They can maintain an airway, help stop bleeding and, if necessary, perform life saving, high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use a defibrillator.

The "SAM" in the name not only refers to Samaritan, but is also an acronym for “Smartphone Activated Medics”.

What Are The Apps ?

We are publishing two applications; GoodSAM Alerter and GoodSAM Responder. The GoodSAM Alerter app uses locational services to track the location of a person in need of a help; after a call is triggered we know exactly where the person is located.

On the other hand, the GoodSAM Responder app continuously sends locational updates to our server to allow the location of volunteer doctors/first-aiders to be tracked so they can be notified of any emergencies occurring around them. For more information please refer to "www.goodsamapp.org".

Which Countries Are Supported ?

Our aim is to potentially cover all the large cities around the globe.

Galaxy S7 - Since today's update I can't change the options for showing name or receiving buzzes, the app just freezes and crashes. Since I have got verified I have tried to add 2 defibs that are not recorded but the report was not sent giving a message that they are already recorded and to report them from the map? I haven't even a facility to select an accurate location when reporting an AED location never mind being able to determine from my description. Needs serious work to be of value

Just keeps crashing, whilst running in the background if you start it up it just crashes. Have submitted loads of crash reports but not been fixed yet.

S70%
by S####:

Been waiting over 2 weeks for approval. How long does this normally take ?? As I'm a first responder with a trust & I.D thought it would be quick and easy obviously not !!!

H70%

Developer is continually updating and addressing issues

S70%

Need to find a way of incorporating navigation into the map to make it easier to quickly get to the patient

S70%

What a fantastic idea.

S70%
by S####:

Great concept and will probably work well once app reliable (critical for an emergency related app, thus only 2 stars) and user/defib database larger in Australia. For example, on my Nexus 5X app crashes nearly every time it is first opened (feedback submitted every time, no response to date, developer denies any reports received), Update for v5. 4 Dec 28 - crashes very frequently now. Therefore downgrade to 1 star.

Could not change anything example. I could not report for duty, reveal my first or last name, locate a AED and app closed down whenever I put my phone away. I cannot be staring at my phone 24/7 so no point. App is a good idea just a lot of work needed for it to work. Deleted app now. Also noticed good sam has only responded to reviews which are higher rated stars? Surely the priority would be those who have the issues with the app.

After update Dec 2016, just crashes all the time on Galaxy S6. But runs ok on S4

installed to my android but he app wont open keeps reporting "Unfortunately Responder has stopped" :( Have already done this...as another has said...it stopped working since the latest update...i already hit the button to "report to us" as you suggested...

On my android phone I am unable to use the app since the recent update. It just keeps saying it needs to close when I log in. Thanks for your reply. I have sent the report now.

Great idea and easy to use app. Only negative is the frequency I get the app failing to respond then closes down.

N70%

Worthless app that keeps crashing. Send crash reports contacted developer by email and they promised an update within 10 days. 10 days are past a long time ago and no update releases so far. Contacted developer again but received no reply.

It works really well and the Tech support team respond extremely quickly to your emails. Great customer service and all round good app

I love that it allows me to locate defibrillators quickly in the event one is needed. I have also been recommending the app to all my student paramedic colleagues. The issue that I was having with the app not loading does not occur on my new Samsung S7. All in all, a great idea that is well executed and an extremely well designed app. The only issue I have is that my settings do not save so I cannot receive notifications unless the app is open, nor can I receive buzz messages within the app.

Didn't work for me, kept reseting my options, and was generally buggy and unhelpful s5 galaxy

Installed app on Samsung Note 4. Cannot save settings therefore unable to receive a buzz. Also cannot view messages. Hi GoodSam team, you still have not fixed these major issues. I have been notified several times and unable to respond due to the bugs in the software. You responded beginning of February saying that the issues would be resolved in the next couple of weeks. There has not been a release. Thanks. 22/06/2016 issues still not resolved!!

Like all the recent reviews, the app is a great idea and really could be something special. Needs to be publicized more as and bugs fixed. Can't upload photos, can't save settings etc. :(

I am having the same problem as the user with the Samsung Galaxy S4. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ running Android 5.1.1 and I am unable to save the settings and the messages don't load. I have installed the latest version, but no difference.

Hi, I seem to have a problem with saving the settings in the Responder app. I am using version 4.4 on a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. It runs Android 4.4.2 and is rooted. On the settings screen if I select 'On' for Start the app after a reboot, Show your name or Receive Buzz the options aren't saved. The app doesn't start automatically on re-boot and every time I re-open the app these settings are re-set to the default 'Off'. My wife seems to have the same problem on a Sony Xperia Z1 running stock Lollipop (not rooted).

Good idea and really admirable but app needs work as it keeps crashing.

V70%
by V####:

The whole idea is great, and it generally works seamlessly - however, even with the new location system, I've been having serious problems with battery drain (it uses almost twice the amount used by the screen). This has sadly lead me to uninstall for the time being, though I'm hopeful for it being resolved!

Q70%

When activated I had to disable the app to stop the alerts. Location is accurate enough with WiFi & cell tower. GPS just kills the battery. Irrelevant when indoors anyway!
