Es begann damit, dass der klinische Psychologe Dr. William Thetford, an der Columbia Universität damals in einem Umfeld heftigen Konkurrenzstreites und negativer Haltungen, eine Entscheidung traf. Für ihn war das Maß voll, als er seiner Kollegin Dr. Helen Schucman folgendes vermittelte: „Es muss einen besseren Weg geben, und ich bin fest entschlossen, ihn zu finden.“ Dr. Schucman versprach, ihm dabei zu helfen.
Für Dr. Schucman folgte eine dramatische Reihe von Wachträumen, die schließlich im Oktober 1965 in ihrer Erfahrung einer deutlich hörbaren inneren Stimme gipfelten, die ihr mitteilte: „Ihr werdet Wunder erblicken, durch Eure Hände, durch die meinen. Dies ist Ein Kurs in Wundern. Bitte schreibe mit.“
Während einer Periode von sieben Jahren, und mit Dr. Thetford's Unterstützung bei der Übertragung der handschriftlichen Aufzeichnungen, entstanden rund fünfzehnhundert Schreibmaschinenseiten von Ein Kurs In Wundern.
Dr. Schucman beanspruchte keine Urheberschaft für dieses durch ein inneres, wörtliches Diktat empfangene Material. Wie sie mehrmals erklärte, lauschte sie einem inneren Diktat, wobei sie den Drang verspürte, die Worte aufzuschreiben, obwohl sie während dieses Prozesses nicht selten Widerstand, ja, sogar Uneinigkeit mit dem Inhalt der Durchgabe verspürte. Die Stimme, die durch Helen Schucman sprach, offenbart ihre Identität als Jesus' Stimme. Trotzdem ist für die Leserschaft ein christliches Gedankengut, beziehungsweise die Akzeptanz traditioneller christlicher Glaubenssätze keine notwendige Voraussetzung dafür, aus den Lehren des Kurses Nutzen zu ziehen. Tatsächlich können viele der im Material anwesenden Äußerungen für traditionell-christliche Gläubige zunächst erstaunlich oder vielleicht unglaublich erscheinen.
