As far as simplicity.. The idea of opening your cellphone to see what is happening in your area is something that I generally appreciate. It's really smart. This is an easy way for companies to let people know of events happening. It can also be to show the turn out (loong lines, crowded areas, etc). I wish the creators the best on a brillliant idea.
