昭和２２年（１９４７年）に皇室祭祀令が廃止されるまでは、皇室で儀式や祭典を行われる日を「祭日」と呼び、祝日とともに国家の休日とされていたことから、祝日と祭日の総称を「祝祭日」といいました。
廃止以降は、「祝日」もしくは「国民の祝日」と言うのが正しいです。
昔のなごりから、今でも「祭日」や「祝祭日」と呼ばれることがあります。

祝日に挟まれた日を休日にする制度。
